Good Afternoon Augustine House Team ,

 

Its been a while since our last communications went out . It came to a  stand still after events of interest came up .This included the Deans Quarter and Semi finals of the Under 18 team and of course the much discussed AGM and the Auditored report.

 

A lot of assumed conclusions were drawn up on the report and somehow have dampened our spirits as an ardent Marist Old Boy.

 

I agree things could have been done better but was not so and we can discuss this  till we go blue in the face. We have to rise above this and demand that procedures & processes be put in place to avoid a repeat of this.Simple there was no process & procedure in place to be enforced which allowed things to happen as it did and complacency crept in.

 

Please do not feel defeated for all is not lost.

 

I invite everyone and espcially those who can make it to a Talanoa session of the core group. If we can meet in the MRC on Tuesday 28^th August after work 6.00pm  next week to map out our strategy.

This is my response to the Audit report after personal attack. I believe some of the houses have written to the executives but have not gotten any formal response as yet. 

I see a post on the MOBA accounts that Brother Sam being quoted as saying, learn from this experience and move on. With all due respect we as Marist Old Boys who have contributed to this financial and in other forms will need some accountability for all these funds. Not to take away the positives achieved by the current leadership but in saying so I am pretty disappointed in the lack of controls in the handling of Marist Old Boys Alumnae financials. I received a message on my Facebook messenger about questioning someone’s qualifications after closed group conversation was forwarded which is the reason for this reply. It was not the question of qualifications or status but integrity and accountability translated from our daily professions to Marist Old Boys Alumnae operations. This is what I have to say to the executives, before asking the question, take an honest approach and ask yourselves as elected members of the Marist Old Boys Alumnae what would happen if this was government education grants or government subsidiary funds or private sector funds and you were in charge imagine the outcomes. Would you all allow this to happen in your said professions? I think not. I am not making this is a witch hunt but we all must agree this needs to be gotten to the bottom of quickly and resolved. I know I have probably offended a few through this post but as a Marist Old Boy I need to call it how it is, as we always call on the Marist Old Boys to donate to the cause and we have elected an executive committee who we have been entrusted substantial funds monetary and otherwise by Fiji standards and expect accountability at the highest levels. Again for those that have taken this as a personal attack it is rather unfortunate as it comes with the position entrusted to you by us the Marist Old Boys Alumnae. Yes let us learn but let us correct this now for the future.

On a lighter note since the funds are no longer dispersed and is held within the association maybe we can have some direction as to where the funds will be utilised if this is not already done. This will improve accountability and transparency going forward. GOD BLESS all the Members of the Marist Old Boys Alumnae here and abroad. Be the best You can be brothers.

As a diehard old boy of the early sixties, nothing has changed my passion and patriotism as a member of our Alma Mater fraternity. Much water has gone under the bridge since I can recall many a wonderful, enjoyable and successful experiences I’ve had while being educated under the Marist system. The only remarkable difference is that I went through the system while the vocational Brothers were in numbers and that really enriched me with the values of the five pillars of character. I see a drop in standard of education in Marist partly because the dedicated Brothers is a dying profession and it is not exactly the same with the Brothers being totally pledged to their vocation of teaching and imparting their wisdom and values as a life-long mission.

 

Your post below does not come across to me as insulting nor degrading against the MOB executives and this particular case of transparency and accountability is a fact of life where I have witnessed and been involved in previous Marist old boys organizations of the past when the system has been compromised due to not following strict guidelines when in responsibility of office bearers in all forms of organizations. It is what it is, total honesty and answerable to the members of anybody dealing and handling finances for projects and other commitments. The defensive denial and not accepting poor upkeep of record for expenditure and fundraising will always be a lame excuse and it seems that we have not learnt that well, being office bearers in any organization. There is always temptation when handling finances and it is not a job for anyone who haven’t had a past record of renown character and experience in all meetings to produce the financial report where money is utilized with substantiated proof of spending.

 

Let’s hope that all old boys take heed to this line of request where we must be totally accountable and transparent in all our future dealings and administration responsibilities. If the job doesn’t resonate with your knowledge and experience, step aside and let someone else take on the task, it is just honesty and great value on your part to recognize the standard and expectation of the whole organization. In summary, when making yourself available in any organization, one must realize that you’re in the public eye and any inappropriate action would be subject to investigation and criticism and be prepared to have broad shoulders to be criticized or accused for wrong and deliberate actions, that is the nature of an honest and forthright character.

Thanks for being forthright about this financial issue with MOBEXCOM. I recall when the current executives were "campaigning" so to speak to be voted into office, they went about spreading lies about finances being abused and books not in order etc etc by the previous EXCOM which I was part of. But of course none of it was true because when the handing over happenend everything was in order and MOB EXCOM finances were pretty much in very good standing. MOB EXCOM then were very much committed to moving things in the right direction and ensuring that MOB funds were spent in the best interest of all stakeholders. Now the very issue they were spreading lies about have come back and bite them in the backside because they have gone and done exactly that. I for one have had a stomach-full of bad experiences with abuse of funds by persons being put in charge of it. Started when I was President of the PTFA at Stella Maris where the Treasurer was involved. Then when I became PTFA President for MBHS, it was the Principal, an event which all MOB are quite familiar with. Now its MOB EXCOM !!

Apparently for me, no matter what the explanation is by the current MOB EXCOM for the "financial fiasco" my trust for them has gone out the window already and I am not going to continue to be party to more fund raising which will be given to them. I would rather that the House fund raise for a particular initiative; sports gear for the rugby teams or soccer teams or even the minor sports like hockey, basketball and swimming which always get left out. At least we know our funds are being spent on worthy causes. Anyway,I don't see any justifiable reason for each house to continue to contribute $10,000 each when we don't see any budgetary commitments being prepared in relation to capital projects or otherwise being identified to be undertaken by MOB during the next 12 months or so. The Brothers now have their own source of income (Mall) and MOB EXCOM doesn't have to worry about their financial welfare any more. So why do we need to maintain the $10,000 contribution per house ? 

I'll leave it to the House to decide on my sentiments as mentioned in the second & third line of sentences in the above paragraph.

We live in a democracy and everyone is entitled to their opinion. I will accept whatever decision is taken by the House.

Having read all your comments, the person or persons in charge of the financial affairs of the mob should step down or be removed. There should be no exception to mismanagement of funds. No one is indispensable. We have a lot of ob who can do the work truthfully and professionally. This is my take, Augustine members, write a letter to the mobcomm, stating our vote of no confidence to the present office bearers.We all sign. Lets take action. Trust is lost.

Vinaka all OBs for your concerns and extremely valuable feedback including bro Diri’s fantastic suggestion. I absolutely agree. 

Earning my crust in the world of finance keeping trusted financial advisers in line .....these folks are trusted by all to manage funds for everyday citizens. 

In my world embezzlement and misappropriation of funds lands individuals in jail...period! That is the dire consequence for dishonesty. Laws and processes must be ADHERED to...we are all educated and understand this...as the very basic expected behaviour....so why make exceptions??

Brand damage and irreversible loss of trust kicks in such circumstances ....then it takes forever to repair. There are huge numbers of old boys who stepped from away FROM THE MOBEXCOM due to the last debacle...more will certainly step away if this one gets away. 

I have always said that if you solicit funds from the public, there MUST be accountability to the donors. Brand damage affects us all as we then lose the leverage of utilising the brand.....This current issue demonstrates absolute disregard for the law and respect for the wider MOB community....I said the same about the first debacle....MADUA outcome for us all...

My 2 cents bit...My total support for  Diri, Vena and Al’s concerns. Let’s try and fix this with as little damage as possible...

Thanks and agree.

In addition to this a financial policy must be drawn up to guide all office bearers on all financial processes. This must be used by MOBEXCOM and all the houses. The policy also protects funds of the MOB.

I for one was being handed blank cheques to sign last year. Please note that I will not be signing anymore blank cheques.

Has there been any further feedback with regards to the MOBA accounts.

I believe only Abhay Maharaj has been banging on that door. I have seen alot of bantering between the stallwarts of the current executives and the members looking to get reports with regards to MOBA funds.

It’s been several months (5 to be exact) since our last communication on this forum.

 

Our point of discussion had been the Accounts of MOBA and if you are on MOBA FB page you would have read the Secretary’s update. I do not want to go there but we will wait for the Special General Meeting date .For those who may not have checked , briefly MOBA has accounted for the $100,000 plus receipts and cheques cut .A small amount is outstanding. Remaining cheques will be uplifted to reconcile the accounts.

 

Now that we can see some closure in the horizen I implore that we continue with our good works as Augustine House Champions and slog on for the good of our House and School.

 

I bring us back to our Motto that Brother Theopane gave us “ubi Caritas,ibi unitas” …..in charity there is unity….

 

Clearly if we as old boys are Not doing charity work than there is no unity that will bind us together as former students of Marist Brother High School.The 5 Pillars are the cornerstones –Presence ,Simplicity,Family Spirit ,Love of Work and in the way of Mary.Our motto is the glue that holds us together.

 

I wish to ignite the  Marist Spirit that brought us together , I want it to burn as our little brothers did by taking out the Inter House Championships.

 

“Augustine House shall rise again”

 

For those who wish to be part of the working committee to please let me know.I am merely one person but with the help of all the Old boys in this email loop , we can revive the burning spirit that is eagerly waiting.

 

I know there will always be obstacles but Augustine House is bigger than all of us.

From what I have heard MOBA executives are requesting each house to give in $1,000.00 towards the MOBA soli for the Athletics. I was not keen on providing a feed back as we have our own issues too.

I'm still an avid and passionate Augustinian and congratulate the boys in green for their recent victory in the house athletic competition this year. Hope you had a restful weekend and enjoyed the Feast Day Celebration organized in our different chapters.

 

Last week we met at the Secretariat as planned where over a bowl of grog shared stories of the life of St Marcellin.This was retold to us by MOBA Secretary Felix Magnus. Also we had the chance to run through our hymns for First Friday Mass which was hosted by Lami MOB.

 

The Visitation to the Brothers was organized on Friday .

 

Speaking to Augustine House members present during the past sessions it was requested that we meet regularly as the more we meet and discuss our team updates/objectives for this year the better it will work for us.

 

I am inviting those who could make it , for a talanoa session on Thursday 13^th at the Secretariat or MRC.

 

It should not take long from – 6pm -8pm after work so we do not burn out members on long drawn out sessions.

Just to update the MOBEXCom has organized a small program me for St Marcelin Feast   Day on 6^th June.

Thank you to those who were able to make it to last night talanoa session and hereunder is a brief of the meeting.

 

There was no Agenda as the Talanoa sesssion’s main purpose was to bring Augustine together and move towards a common goal for the year.

Interim Chair for the Augustine House – Saimone Shaw

Greeted all and acknowledged their presence given that this was the 1^st meeting for the year .Its been long overdue.Also acknowledged the presence of MOBA Pres. Opetaia Ravaia and Secretary Felix Magnus.

MOBA Pres was invited to update the House on the latest in regards to the AGM,Audit Report and Bazaar.

 

MOBA President – Opetaia Ravai (OP)

 

OP spoke at length on the Audit Report. He confirmed that all expenses has been accounted for. It was a long and tedious task to retrack all the purchases done but they have done the hard yards to prove that everything was rightfully purchased.3 main projects undertaken was the Secretariat , Marist Brothers Project at Lomary and Mobilise 2017.

 

OP further confirmed that the AGM should be called next month in July 2019 if not earlier.All members to pay up subs of $20 to able to vote in the AGM.The cuurent MOBExcom has completed their 3 years.The next team will take us through the next 3 years.

 

Also November 2019 has been set aside for the annual MOB Bazaar and targets including projects to be announced upfront.

 

Members Discussion

 

1.       OB Percy Kean : enquired what is the current structure in the Augustine Team.

Interim Chair :  Currently there is no structure as when George resigned last year for personal reasons a committee met and current chair was point of contact and organized events for Fundraising .Last year we had a raffle and a gunu sede. There was also pledges being made.However when the Audit issue came up all activities ground to a halt.

 

2.       OB Percy Kean : How about we pick a new team for Augustine .

OB Alifereti : It is practical to have the current ad hoc arrangement given that we have no meetings and the member present tonight is enough to form a committee to meet regularly ,organize activities and engagements.

This was unanimously agreed.

The team that was present to form the committee : Alifereti ,Alfred ,George , Saimone ,Meli ,Samu .

Anyone available would be most welcome .

 

3.       The next date for the committee to meet would be next week to formalize working structure

4.       The Treasurer report was not available – However the signatories remain the same Ben Baka and Manoa Makaba .Only commitment was the $150 for Feast day last week.

 

General

 

1.       It was also Georges Birthday – George and his wife Patsy Rokoua were solid Augustine House supporters.After Patsy had passed on last year George went through a difficult time.We thank him for all those years as a husband and wife team supporting Augustine House.It was only fittng that our 1^st meeting this year fell on his birthday and the team put in for 2 birthday cakes and invited him over to show our appreciation and congratulations on his birthday.

2.       Meeting closed after Rev.father Leronio Vodivodi said a prayer.

I would like to convey my heartiest congratulations to all the hard working members with your unwavering stirling efforts over the years. I would like to add that I am quite impressed how you all have banded together to raise funds for various projects towards the High School each year...most impressive!

Thanks for filling me in with your last meeting and I would very much like to request if I can attend your next House meeting after July 10th as I'll be visiting from Brisbane to conduct speaking engagements on prostate cancer through the Fiji Cancer Society and would like to give my thoughts on the Augustine brotherhood what it really means to me and all other old boys during my era of the early sixties. It would be a great opportunity for me to meet and get to know many of the green brothers much younger than me. I feel proud and bonded as you can envisage from this email how much I feel part of the Augustine family.

Our 2^nd House Meeting for the year was held in the Club on Wednesday 3^rd July 2019.

 

Meeting proper started 6.10pm

 

Venue : Marist Rugby Club

 

Present : Samu Vuibeqa , father Leronio Vodivodi ,George Mawi ,Peter Keane, Eparama Lagi ,Jone Qasenivalu, Alfred Peckham, Meli Bainimarama

 

Welcome : Chair Saimone welcomed everyone and thanked for making the effort to attend the meeting.

Agenda  : 1.Fundraising

 

                        The were several Fundraiser activities discussed  for us to choose from.This included but not limited to the ones held previously

 

1.    Raffle sheets – $1 per block x 20 blocks per sheet – prize 1 chicken x 10 draws

2.    Barrel night - $20 per ticket x 150 tickets

3.    Kava Barrel - $10 per ticket

4.    Duka / Sava – $30 -Drink Grog for 2 hour then Wash down with beer 1 hour.

5.    BBQ and Beer – Invite the Youth of the Augustine team and they can pay any amount they wish towards this effort.

6.    Sevens Sports – either rugby ,soccer ,touch rugby ,tag rugby ,etc. – this would encourage the youth to organize teams and pay entry fee of say $200 per team .Prize money for the winners to be sponsored or taken from pool.

 

After further deliberations it was decided that we do a raffle similar as last year where without much effort we managed to collect a little over $1,000 from that activity alone.

 

This was unanimously agreed.

Thank you for acknowledging our update.After the 1st Friday Mass yesterday the Old Boys decided that MOBA present its reguregu to Arthur's family on Thursday.This has affected our plans for the meeting and could be brought forward to Wednesday.However this gives us the opportunity to meet the larger group on Thursday.

We will accompany and take Arthur's  body to his residence on Thursday afternoon.All the Old Boys who wish to be part of the reguregu are asked to meet up at the Secretariat for final soli and briefing on arrangements. Meanwhile the Secreatariat will recive monetary contributions from those who wish to assist from Monday onwards and may not be available on Thursday.

FIner details will be disseminated by Secretariat.

Hope this confirms for now.

1. BBQ and Beer – Invite the Youth of the Augustine team and they can pay any amount they wish towards this effort.

1. OB Percy Kean : enquired what is the current structure in the Augustine Team.

Interim Chair :  Currently there is no structure as when George resigned last year for personal reasons a committee met and current chair was point of contact and organized events for Fundraising .Last year we had a raffle and a gunu sede. There was also pledges being made.However when the Audit issue came up all activities ground to a halt.

 

2. OB Percy Kean : How about we pick a new team for Augustine .

OB Alifereti : It is practical to have the current ad hoc arrangement given that we have no meetings and the member present tonight is enough to form a committee to meet regularly ,organize activities and engagements.

This was unanimously agreed.

The team that was present to form the committee : Alifereti ,Alfred ,George , Saimone ,Meli ,Samu .

Anyone available would be most welcome .

 

3. The next date for the committee to meet would be next week to formalize working structure

3. The Treasurer report was not available – However the signatories remain the same Ben Baka and Manoa Makaba .Only commitment was the $150 for Feast day last week.

 

General

 

1. It was also Georges Birthday – George and his wife Patsy Rokoua were solid Augustine House supporters.After Patsy had passed on last year George went through a difficult time.We thank him for all those years as a husband and wife team supporting Augustine House.It was only fittng that our 1^st meeting this year fell on his birthday and the team put in for 2 birthday cakes and invited him over to show our appreciation and congratulations on his birthday.

We have passed the halfway mark on achieving our target of 40 sheets.We are doing well . 16 Old Boys have stepped up so far to assist and support.

 

Keep up the good work . Others please do come forward.

 

Our meetings this week has been postponed to next week as we are having the” kumuni yau” or soli at the Secretariat deck for Arthurs Funeral.

Good Morning All !

 

Last night we had an impromtu  meeting with some House members (Percy ,father Leronio,Barry ,etc) who were present to discuss a fund raiser event that was booked for the Deck this weekend.Its the Maori/Fiji and U18 Finals weekend.

 

It will be a Kati  Chicken @ 10 draws. We will use 2 decks of cards and sell at $10 per card x 52 . Gross income $520.On the side we will also sell curry chicken for the hungry ones as grog will be happening at the deck.If we make 20 serves sold @$5 per serve we should make $100.

 

Our expenses to buy the bag of chicken and for the curry is $200.

 

In total we should net $420 from this small effort. Apart from that it is a show of commitment to the other houses that we are back and alive.

 

Request if this could be endorsed so the treasurer and signatories be on stand by to cut this cheque of $200.

 

I will buy the cards and distribute them to whoever request for cards once available . We will capitalize on the congregation of old boys this weekend .

 

Furthermore thank you Sam for accepting to sell 2 raffle sheets.

 

We are starting to see the raffle money coming in and thank you .

The last couple of days has been hectic given our commitments and the workfront.Thank you for various support we have received from all old boys in our fundraising efforts/

 

1.     Kati & Curry Nite

 

As you know this was a last minute fundraiser and it was to capture the moment on the deck as we had reserved the date. There were few learnings and we will work on it in our future fundraising.

Since the cards cost $10 and was limited only to those on the deck it was big ask for all to fork out money to purcahse Kati cards , Curry and also buy their grog.

However we proceeded with the Kati .
