Dear J4F Club members,
I am posting this message on behalf of Rick Wilburn, another member of J4F who is a close associate of mine, and who has, in the past, periodically exchanged emails with Harold Sides, including twice offering to visit him, as they live in neighboring states, he in Tennessee, Harold in Alabama, and assist him with the work of sending out deposits, etc. entirely at Rick’s expense. At the time, Harold did not reply back to the offers, but there were periodic email exchanges between them over a long time in the past.
We all read Harold’s last message June 24 regarding his hospital stay, in which he stated that he had been in the hospital for a week and recovering from surgery, and was expecting to be going to rehab for a few weeks. He also stated that he had someone who could help keep us updated, but, unfortunately, for whatever reason, we have not as yet received any new information from anyone else, or have any solid evidence that someone is assisting. This may be simply because Harold has been too ill to update us, as you will see from reading the new information below.
-------------------------------------------
I received an email from Rick on August 2, which I am sharing, mostly verbatim, (see large bold print) as follows:
“I got frustrated with Harold and “no updates” situation. So a couple of minutes ago, I decided to try to reach him.
I know he lives in Montgomery, Alabama, so I pulled up a listing of hospitals in Montgomery. There’s probably four or five. So I dialed the first one that came up on my list and the receptionist at the hospital answered and I said would you put me through to the room of Harold Sides. It was like a needle in a haystack, of course! And then, low and behold, the lady answering the phone said just a moment and then she came right back to me and she said are you a family member and I said no just a good friend. She said that he was in ICU CVU and there are no phones in that room! Only family members would be allowed to go up to see him. And she asked me if I was a family member and I said no. He is still in the hospital and he’s in ICU”
I received another email from Rick on August 14, in which he told me that after he had contacted the nurse (see above), she then informed Harold that Rick had called the hospital asking to speak to him. Harold then sent an email to Rick through the nurse via his laptop, in which he already had Rick’s email address. He was too weak to type himself, so he dictated the message to the nurse who typed the message into his laptop. The following information is what Rick shared with me from that email, verbatim (see large bold print):
“Harold ended up having not one, but 3 surgeries within the 2 months leading up to the beginning of August. He also had an ARTERIAL BLEED, (an emergency complication during one of the surgeries), which required 5 pints of blood to replace, a very significant loss of blood which presumably takes some time to recover from. He was currently (August 14) in the ICU CVU (Intensive Care Unit - Cardiovascular Unit).
I was planning to share the above information within the next few days. However, yesterday, Rick sent me another email and he mentioned something from that previous email from Harold sent through the nurse that he had forgotten to mention, which I consider to be very significant. This new information is verbatim as follows:
“The only positive thing Harold said thru the nurse was “He hasn’t forgotten and things are still moving forward and he has to get out of here, meaning the hospital.”
In conclusion, my understanding is that Harold has always been telling the truth about his illnesses and prolonged hospital stays. I also believe that Harold intends to honor his commitment to sending out the deposits and then the final large balance to all the J4F members that he still has contact information on, but his efforts have been stymied time and time again in the last 6-12 months. From the latest information from the nurse, it appears that Harold is not in a life-threatening situation, despite numerous surgeries, that also includes kidney surgery, which requires Harold to have dialysis 3 times a week, and which requires a day to recover from each of the 3 times. Clearly, Harold cannot complete the task by himself, and he has already stated a number of times that he is getting help. So, personally, I am giving Harold the benefit of the doubt, and suggest that everyone be patient and wait for future updates from Harold.
Sincerely,
Nathan Zafran
