Hi,

I have a few (3) local map projections that we use for work in other applications. I tried using it in MapInfo but it only reads and opens the files from the source coordinate system.

I would like to overlay other layers map files from the known coordinate system (AGD66) onto the local coordinate system.

I was trying to create the local grid and save it in the text file (MAPINFOW.PRJ) to use it but it requires Admin Access to save it. I could not save it.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Regards,
Jason

Hi,

Your IT department should be able to deal with it. Give you access.

Kind regards

I've always followed Uffe's suggested path. My IT group keeps me out of the C drive (in my case), where all the executables lie.  But they give me read/write privileges for the PRJ file in MapInfo, a relatively harmless text file that resides in the C drive. Surely your overlords can manage the same.

Jason, your request was three brief paragraphs, and this reply applies to paragraph 3.  Question or work-flow problems seems hinted at in paragraph 2 and possibly 1, but I'm uncertain about that.

Hi,

I am a single user with MI Pro installed on my Laptop computer. I am the administrator of the computer. I purchased the MIPro V23 from a reseller. Even with the Admin rights to the computer, does that give me rights to modify the PRJ file in MIPro?

Thanks

Regards,
Jason

Try this – it’s from the Discover KB… read the note in bold. That’s what I have to do when I’m updating the .prj file with another custom projection – oh and add it to the bottom of the projection list, as if there is an issue with the projection, the projections that follow may not work as expected.

If the projection is not appearing in MapInfo Pro, it will need to added to the default MAPINFOW.PRJ file located in -

C:\Program Files\MapInfo\Professional (64-bit)

C:\Program Files (x86)\MapInfo\Professional (32-bit)

Note that these are read only locations, so you will need to copy the file to your desktop, edit it, and then copy back to overwrite with the changes.

Best Regards,

Jason, I never thought of it as a "right" to change the dot-PRJ file.  It's a need.
MapInfo can't predict all the projections that a user might use, so they designed a flexible system.
You can change it as long as you follow the rules that maintain its operational capacity.

Barbara's emboldened text about READ ONLY (move it to your desktop to edit it) may solve the problem you've been having.  I never encountered the need to do so in the 32-bit version of MapInfo Pro.

I insert the new projections in their appropriate place.  If adding a Regional Conformal element, then that's the heading where I place it.  If a UTM element, then I put it there, within the grouping for appropriate datum.  But suit yourself.  I suppose you could put all your projections at the tail end of the PRJ file under some heading "Newly Added Projections."  Don't know about that.

In closing, I'm pasting in a sampling from my PRJ file, UTM-NAD27, showing (in bold typeface) the gyrations needed to project some old USGS maps and the projections used in their archival map source. These are relatively simple additions, no rotations, no translations. My point?--the changes are easy to make and the PRJ file remains responsive.  Dave Sherrod

And to get around the permission issue, right-click on the shortcut to your text editor and select “Run as Administrator”.

This gives the text editor permission to edit files in locations that require Admin permission
