Lee, that was an interesting YouTube presentation you shared on Ranked Choice Voting featuring Robert Reich, who I adore.

However, Reich really makes a much stronger argument for another petition being circulated for the 2026 ballot that aims to curb utilities and government contractors from funding campaigns and election ads. It’s called Move Money Out of Politics (MMOP). I encourage people to check it out. It would do a great service to eliminate all the annoying TV and radio ads, which is NOT anything that the RCV initiative can guarantee.

Also, in the video, I notice thabReich did NOT rank his entire ballot—he failed to exhaust his own ballot. Did Beatrix really win? Was Robert’s ballot even counted in the final tally since he did NOT complete his ranking? Disenfranchisement occurs when people fail to exhaust their ballots‼️

(FACT CHECK: In the 2021 New York City (NYC) Mayoral Election, the NYC Elections Bureau reported that 140,000 voters’ ballots did NOT even count toward the final results as their ballots had not been completed—they had not exhausted their ballots.)

Also, Reich says that RCV makes campaigns nicer.

(FACT CHECK: we saw with our own eyes just how RCV worked in the 2025 NYC Mayoral race. Momdani won the Primary; so Cuomo, who had lost the Primary filed as an Independent to continue running. Both sides were nasty and ugly in dredging up dirt on the other. Momdani beat Cuomo; the best candidate WON‼️🤗💙Cuomo is now a two-time dead horse who was bolstered by the billionaires and corporations. He spent so much more than Momdani, who had people power with an average of $98 per individual donor, according to the NYC Campaign Finance Bureau. See graph below.)

The problem with the Michigan Move Money Out of Politics (MMOP) is that it leaves open a HUGE loophole.  The way the proposed initiative legislation is written all a utility and government contractors have to do is give the money to a PAC (political action committee), or create their own PAC if a suitable one does not exist.  The PAC in turn funds the campaign.  And with Citizens United one can't avoid use of PACs.

The USA is almost the only advanced industrial nation that does not have very strict campaign contribution restrictions.  See posts in Manistee Dems, Manistee Dems private group, for more about this and a possible solution.

Kurt, thanks for your views on MMOP. You hit the nail on the head with regard to the obscene money involved in politics today. Though the contractors and companies can form PACs, the difference is that the PACs require reporting of contributors and expenses, as opposed to unregulated activities now.
