We should have a discussion about naming things we create.

When it comes to trademark, we need to get it right the first time.

Here's an article by the founder of Artisan's Asylum, Gui Cavalcanti, that discusses the different meanings of Hackerspace, Makerspace etc:

So far, I've noticed most of the "Makerspaces" around the country don't have Makerspace in their name - Artisan's Asylum, Third Ward, Tech Valley Center of Gravity, Columbus Idea Foundry. They may call themselves Makerspaces in their other copy, but not in the name itself.

Great article Kevin!

Since our goal is a makerspace rather than a Hackerspace and since after reading the article there is a true distinction between the two spaces we need to be focused on what is going on at the space as well as who will use it. Is there a way we might be able to survey potential and current makers to get some input?
I think the more feedback we get the better we can come up with names and designs. Either way thank you and thanks to Scott for taking the lead on this!

Once we have a list of names, I can do some quick knockout searching. We don't want a Blood & Sand incident on our hands (for the lazy, local restaurant didn't perform any trademark diligence, was sued for trademark infringement).

Yes, good article and good thoughts on the maker survey and name trademark infringement search.

Columbus Idea Foundry is a pretty cool name. Worth noting they are moving into 60,000 sq ft with a $350,000 grant that will make them the biggest in the country. Coincidentally, the biggest current maker resources identified so far are at the Foundry/Buffalo Lab. Maybe Foundry or Buffalo Lab should be in the name.

There are a number of newer makerspaces that do use the word makerspace in their titles: Rochester MakerspaceDallas Makerspace7hills Makerspace, etc. It does give immediate recognition as a makerspace and not a hackerspace and ties to the work Make Magazine, the Maker Faire and the general media are doing to publicize the Maker Movement. The idea of saying it as Makerspace Buffalo rather than Buffalo Makerspace is to capture the idea that even though there aught to be a central hub makerspace, it's also a collaborative network of city wide maker resources. The whole city can be a makerspace! Not saying that should be the name, just want to do justice to the 30 seconds or so of thought put into that name. We should brainstorm a bunch of names.

Good discussion. I wanted us to think trademark from the beginning, having had several, shall I say, less than wonderful experiences with trademark violation.

We should be brainstorming names at some later point. We should probably have a Google doc or dedicated discussion thread to capture ideas as we go along.
