Allison and I saw at least seven over Cobbosseecontee Stream in Gardiner yesterday. The alewifes are “in” although they still end up just bumping up against one of the dams there. The good news is that we now have a local, grassroots group called Upstream which is steadily working toward establishing migratory fish passage on the steam to restore alewife populations and the entire ecosystem. The Cobbosseecontee watershed apparently is considered to be a watershed that would support one of the largest alewife populations on the East Coast if we could remove the barriers that stop them from migrating back from the sea to spawn.
