When I wrote the Lesser Black-backed Gull account for Birds of Maine, I discovered through eBird records that the peak of Lesser Black-backed Gull migration through Maine was in September as you guys have been noting! Apparently most of these birds are originating from an expanding breeding population in Greenland.
