Southern York County CBC (MEYC)

Our count was held on December 20th. Conditions were good, with almost no wind and temps in the high 20s and low 30s.Thirty people tallied 90 species. We doubled the previous high count for Pileated Woodpecker, at 16, and a number of species matched their standing high count, including Snow Goose (3); Northern Harrier (5); Common Raven (16); and Winter Wren (3). Numbers for Sea ducks were pretty low, and Great Black-Backed Gull had a new low of 6(!). We also scored quite a few rarities, including Ruffed Grouse, Wilson’s Snipe, Black-headed Gull, Eastern Screech Owl, Snowy Owl (can we still call this rare?), Great Horned Owl, Pine Warbler, and Ipswich Savannah Sparrow. New high counts included, besides PIWO, Carolina Wren (28, previous high 21); Eastern Bluebird (200, previous high 131); and American Pipit (22). We also added a new species: Turkey Vulture, with 6 seen. Thanks to everyone who helped out, and let’s hope we can have more sea birds, more winter finches and a real compilation next year!!!
