I’m going to be working on Monhegan for part of every week this summer, and while I’ve spent time (and birded) here in the summer before, the island continues to surprise me. Today I saw an Indigo Bunting on Horns Hill—it shouldn’t be unexpected but I’d never seen one here before in summer. Then later heard a Greater Yellowlegs over the harbor. On an after-dinner walk, I watched for quite a while as a huge number of White-winged Crossbills—80? 100? there were several large flocks moving around—enthusiastically fed in the spruce trees around and beyond the Brewery. Cones were raining all around me as I watched them. They were singing a bit in the trees and very vocal in flight. Tonight on Horns Hill I’m hearing a Sora calling down in the Meadow and before it got too dark, I was seeing/hearing an American Woodcock fly back and forth between the hill and the Meadow. Swainson’s Thrushes at dusk were expected but also lovely to hear.
Another sighting that was expected but always a pleasure was the good number of Wilson’s Storm-petrels seen from the ferry on the way out this morning.
