Birding folks:

A colleague wrote to me with this question. Can anyone supply information
on what this robin might be doing? Thanks.

"Behind our house in Waterville is a vacant house and a Robin has been
flying to a second story window, fluttering against it and then going back
to perch on the branch of a tree. It has been doing this, literally, all
day. I fear it will die of exhaustion. It flutters all over the window and
then goes back to the tree branch briefly and starts over again. Any idea
what is happening with it??"

We get it at least once a year with robins. They see their reflection as they pass by our basement windows and can’t help but feel the need to defend the territory against the perceived threat. Usually being near there for a bit or blocking the reflection helps dissolve that notion.

We had a mockingbird do the same thing although not all day... Just randomly, for 5-10 min, throughout the day.

The generally accepted explanation is that the bird perceives their reflection as a rival bird challenging their territory. Putting some kind of temporary anti-reflective over the window usually helps. Good luck!

Many thanks for all the responses about the robin and its reflection! I
will relay this to Amy Calder.
