The loons at Moosehead Lake are just nesting now.  Not a juvenile from this year!

FYI - The Wesserunsett Lake (Madison) Annual Loon Count total for adult-sized loons for the period 1983-2019 is 430. Of that total, only three were loons in non-breeding plumage (juveniles?). That's about 0.7% of the adult-sized total.I can recall seeing two others in non-breeding plumage during the summer on non-count days. One socialized with a group of loons in breeding plumage while the other fled for its life while being chased by a much larger adult loon. My guess is that all these are juveniles that migrated inland from the ocean before they were ready to breed. Just a guess on my part, however. Will

Found this factoid in Birds of the World, re. Common Loons' age at breeding...

Average age at first-breeding for Common Loons is 6 years (range 4 - 11 yr; 94, W. Piper, pers. com.)

Thank you, I did not know that fact, and I worked on the first loon counts in Maine for Maine Audubon back in the day,,, circa early eighties!
