Feather and calls

Garrett,

The calls you recorded do suggest a young bird begging to be fed.  However, I once followed two young Barred Owls around our neighborhood (I live in a rural town) and their calls were more like hisses.  This doesn't mean Barred Owls of this age don't have other calls, but just indicating what I heard this one time.

Also, I think the feather you found is more likely that of a hawk.  I have a similar feather and believe it is from a Red-shouldered Hawk.  Wing feathers of the Barred Owl seem to have white tips and the barring is more regular and perhaps narrower as well, without the rather broad black terminal band.  See here:
