Tree swallows/Kokadjo-Frenchtown

Returned this morning.

Vultures returned last week. Seen perching on roofs surveying the ground closely when snow was still prevalent.

Kestrels back a week ago, hunting the feeders. Now that the snow is receding I suspect they’ll move out.

Pond remains iced over. The few Hoodies, Buffles, and Megansers are sharing the river.

Purple finches and song sparrows arrived about ten days ago. One lone goldfinch joined yesterday. First one I’ve seen in months.

The hordes of Evening Gosbeaks and Pine Siskens have mostly moved on , making way for blackbirds. The Pine Grosbeaks have been gone for two months.

A herring gull did a flyby last week. They’ll be back

And “our” meadowlark was joined by flickers and robins last week. Heard it singing once. But when the weather warmed two days ago it was off, as we hoped and suspected.

Yikes! 2 Tree Swallows just appeared on the wires in front of my house, ( trailer park) squawking away, less than the width of my yard from where a bluebird is looking out of my bluebird box. I have just one box. Don’t plan on buying another one. Will the swallows chase the bluebirds out? The bluebirds have been around for weeks, if not months. Swallows nested in it last year. 😕

Hi Barbara,

Yes they will drive out the blue birds.  I have not seen any tree
swallows this year.  I only had a few pairs last year and 15 nests
filled in 2020.  I do have a nesting pair of kestrels.  I have one
phoebe and I have seen osprey in every nest I have seen from Kittery to
Benton.

I recommend getting a second bird house, one for the swallows and one for the bluebirds. It usually works.
