getting started with BeagleBone, PBX-BB 4.1 board

I am retrofitting a New Hermes engraver with MachineKit, a Probotix PBX-BB breakout board (the earlier version), and Geckodrive G251X drives, but am having trouble getting started again.  i began this journey three years ago, but am just picking it back up. 

downloaded latest image from here onto 8gb SD card:

the beaglebone boots up just fine, and i get a home screen with the beagle beagleboard.org screen image. 

using command terminal, the "machinekit" command returns nothing.  the original image i used two years ago had machinekit listed in the start menu.  how do i access the Axis screen now?

thanks for patience, there are a lot of learning curves for me.
