I have a yahoo address, use it as my primary, and intend to keep it. I don't disparage it like you. While I disagree with the manner in which Yahoo rolled this out (they should have given more time, and better tools to manage the reduced size), the free 20GB limit is better than Gmail.
Since size matters more than age, I focused on that. While I have always used the web browser interface, it does not show message size - only if a message has attachments, which won't necessarily include inline photos. So I had to look for a different interface. The Apple Mail App can show messages ordered by largest size first - just select "Show Message Size" and "Use Column Layout" in the View menu. No doubt any standard iMap client can do likewise - but the stock Apple Mail app was good enough.
With the message size ordering, it was easy enough to remove lots of old large messages and relatively quickly get in under the 20GB limit. It also allowed discovery of subject lines that were no longer interesting, and eliminate tons of those associated messages quickly. I chose to spend an extra hour whittling away further to get my usage under 8GB, a reasonable buffer for now. By not changing my existing address, I did not need to change subscriptions, add forwarding, etc.

Here is one brute force approach to just get rid of old mail, assuming that you don’t want to keep it. Go to the Yahoo Mail website. At the top of the window there is a search bar. Enter criteria like -after:"1999-07-01" before:"2002-07-17”you will see a list of those old messages. Click the pop-up menu, a down arrow next to the selection box at the top of the list. Select “All.” Very briefly, you will see feedback that says something like “25 messages selected. Select all 5,256 messages matching this search.” Click on that second sentence. This works better than clicking the selection box and scrolling forever to select all. Note that the highlighted sentence disappears after a few seconds, just to irritate you. If you miss it, Select All again. WIth the thousands of messages selected, you can click the trash icon at the top of the page to put them in the trash. You still have to empty the trash, though. To do that, click the three dots, ellipsis if you’re fancy, on the left sidebar menu and select “Trash.” Now that you are looking at all those old files you tossed, repeat the “Select All, select disappearing sentence” technique you just learned and finally, click the trash icon at the top of the page to permanently delete the old files. Note that if there are under a couple hundred message in the filtered list, sometimes the disappearing sentence enabling you to select all doesn’t appear. You will just have to scroll the list instead to make sure that all are selected, or you can try selecting all again. Sometimes that makes the sentence appear.Note that all this works for you only if you want to delete old files and not bother downloading them. By the way, if you want to get rid of Yahoo mail completely, you will have to go through your mail, or your password manager, determine which accounts are linked to your Yahoo Mail address, log onto those accounts and change your user email address for those accounts. That can be very time consuming if you have a lot of accounts. Keep a record of that process if you choose to do that. It might be worth your time because Yahoo Mail is a big spam magnet, long in the tooth and always nagging you to get a pay account. After I clean up my mailbox, I may keep the address just in case I missed changing any userid email addresses. BTW, I am having some trouble changing my AppleID to a new user email since doing that requires that use a mobile device, but most of those are logged in with my mac.com email. Sounds like a trip to the Genius Bar is in the cards.Pictures below may help. Good luck.Dennis Kane

Hey, at least I no longer use my AOL or Compuserve addresses. So I will go about deleting my emails and switching any subscriptions to gmail, which may take days. I have a few tricks like using the search field to select a ton of spam from the same sender to delete it as well as use the storage window to identify large attachments, but I was curious whether anyone new a cool trick like how to script it to forward mail to a gmail account and delete the yahoo mail. Not keen on this as I want to just get rid of Yahoo ASAP.Dennis Kane
