This little window keeps popping up on my Mac. I think that it’s contacts related and will pop up unexpectedly in any application. It started last night right after the LAPUG meeting so my first reaction was to blame Phil. ;-> Blaming others is a great way to go through life. Anyway, does someone recognize this annoyance and how to kill it.

I’m sure it IS Phil’s fault, but as I was baffled by it too, I thought I’d ask ChatGPT what it might be. Here’s what it suggested:

> It offers options to initiate a call using your iPhone or FaceTime via Continuity, assuming you’re signed into the same Apple ID and have Handoff and Wi-Fi Calling enabled.
>
> Possible Triggers:
> 1. Hovering over or clicking a phone number link in an email, website, or other app.
> 2. Right-clicking a contact name or phone number in apps like Mail or Safari.
> 3. Auto-detecting contact info in documents or webpages (macOS can recognize and underline phone numbers).
> 4. Clipboard content—pasting or copying a phone number can sometimes activate this context menu in supported apps.

It suggests you could disable Handoff, but that’s SUCH a useful feature to be able to do things like copy and paste between devices, I wouldn’t want to give it up.

Is it possible it is being triggered by hovering over numbers?

It’s related to Handoff. I enabled that for the first time last night. I’m not sure what’s triggering it. I tried some of your suggestions and the little window did not pop up. I’ll likely turn off Handoff and go back to texting myself when I want to share the clipboard.

I would not throw the baby out with the bathwater here. Handoff is an extremely useful tool. I use it all the time. I also never see this pop-up. If it hasn't happened in a while I'd let it ride and see how it goes.

To help understand exactly what triggers that menu, it would be more helpful to have a screenshot that includes what it was related to…

In Dennis’s original email, he said it “pops up unexpectedly in any application”. He may eventually find a pattern but he hasn’t found it yet.

Yes, that’s why I asked for more context…seeing more of the screen would help to determine the cause. That window does not pop up without some sort of trigger.

It’s still weirding out even with handoff turned off. I guess I’ll try rebooting.

Sorry, it looks to me like an authentication popup. Have you been to any of your legitimate websites with two-factor authentication? Like a bank or anything? It is just asking where you want the six digit authentication code sent?

It’s coming from inside the house…wait - that was for something else.

This is the autofill feature in Safari. I normally have that turned off because I use 1Password for that. I turned it on and voila!:
PastedGraphic-1.png

You might have had another window or tab open that was asking for information. Quitting Safari (or restarting) should clear it out. If you want to adjust your settings it’s in Safari/Settings/Autofill.

Cheers,
Pat

My photographer friend has a Lacie external mechanical drive. The on light is visible (its getting power) but there is no discernible motion. He's tapped it and still no movement. He would like to recover the data.

He informs me that Darweesh and Pacific Premiere on Artesia are gone. Bummer!

Does anyone have a recommended data recovery service? Thanks in advance.
