1931 -32 Who was Hot and Who was not?

Two attachments -

During the early 1930's and well into the 50's bike racing was not  regional like it is now ( N. Va, DC, Md, Del) but very local .

There was no I-95, Balto- Wash Pkway, Jersey Turnpike and cars were not that dependable.

 

The local clubs did a good job putting together a racing schedule that went from April to the end of October. My guess is that not all events were ABL of A sanction . Each club had club championships and other clubs were invited to compete.

The first attachment at the bottom you will see that several local Baltimore riders were going to Philly to race in 25 mile "Unpaced " (TT) event. I'm sure a trip like this required lots of planning.

Both of these riders were 1930 ish Junior riders and just moved up to Sr.

There were three clubs in the Baltimore area.

Maryland Bicycle Club - 

Century Road Club Association - It may have had its roots in NYC.

Century Road Club of America - Hdqts in Chicago with divisions in St Louis, NY, NJ and a Maryland Div.

 

Many of these articles riders are reported to be members of the Century Road Club ...

Again, speculation on my part -the person reporting the race didn't know the difference between the two "Century " clubs.

The report might have also been phoned in to the nearest daily paper and they cut corners on the club name.

Its in the middle of a horrific depression but bike racing continues at Clifton Park.

 

1933 on this one mile cinder track the Glock Memorial 50 mile "unpaced" event will take place.

Tony Muggio ( Maryland Bicycle Club star) is the defending champ.

This had to be an officials nightmare and how many officials did they have to get the job done.

Each rider was doing a 50 (60 laps ) TT.

 

John Phillips wins the CRC of A club sprint championship.

 

Phil Dorsch wins the Maryland Bicycle Club 25 ,15 and 1/4 championship.

 

1935 John Phillips, Francis Ruppel, Phil Dorsch, Clyde Nitz , Norman Kratzer, and Louis Feritta are in a six way battle State elimination at Clifton Park.

 

1934 CRC of A starts Maryland Division.

Maybe someone can explain this difference. (I'm basing this on some sponsor advertisements in the 1939 National Championship program I have.)

In the 1939, two organizations existed that had the initials CRCA :

1. Century Road Club of America "Incorporated December 19th, 1895" "Emile Fraysee (sic) National Secretary 25 East Winant Ave. Ridgefield Park, N. J. " 

2. Century Road Club Association "Incorporated 1899 Secretary Reginald J. Pilling" Address 155 W 162nd St NY"

Both exist today:

#1 http://centuryroadclub.org/

#2  https://www.crca.net/ 

#2 is the one that controls NYC racing. 

But in the 1939 program #1 has all the famous names: Jimmy Walthour, Jack Simes, Jr, Bobby Walthour, Fraysse

What happened to #1? 

When I see CRCA in historical results, is it #1 or #2?

1932 and Clifton Park is the go to place for bike racing. Scan the attached local newspaper articles. 

 

Maryland Bicycle Club promotes Clifton Park races at 2:15 ! (2:15 ?)

Louis Feritta wins Maryland Bicycle Club long distance championship.

State Championships to be held Oct 2 -9 !

 

Yes ! You will be tested.

In April we hope to have 75 th  Chespeake Wheelmen  Club Dinner !

Part of the festivities will be our Bike Racing Triva contest.

Hotly contested .

1982 Pro bicycle race bigger then the Preakness ? Well known Sunpaper writer Bill Tanton thought so .

The Baltimore Sunpaper and Ch 2 (WMAR) did an outstanding job with pre- race publicity and real time race coverage.

This article gives a good insight as to what WMAR was going to do to improve their local image. 

They spent mega bucks putting this show together . They could have but did not sell out to a national network so as to keep it local. I hope they sold the TV rights to other countries.

1984 Francesco Moser breaks the Hour Record covering 31 miles in one hour.

Note - Front wheel is a tad smaller in diameter (650c)

 

Moser set the record at 49.4 K on January 19.

 

He then comes back  four days later and extended the record to 51.1 K.

background - the four of us were heading to the Lancaster Pro Race in June 2005.  On the way we stopped at the ERA Ski and Bike shop to look around. But the Moser TT machine was not for sale.

A spectacular 1976 one of a kind race on the Atlantic City Boardwalk.

 

Pace cars, moto's, 150 riders in the Pro 1-2 race thundering down the boardwalk.

60+ Katherine Kramer saw a bike race in NJ and decided she wanted a big event for her home town Atlantic City.

She had some clout.

In attendance - NJ Congressmen, Senators , Delegation from Korean Embassy.

Plenty of supporting events and a ferris wheel !

Saturday night straight line sprints on the boardwalk.

Promoted for maybe 3 years.

When gambling came in cycling was out.

She moved the race to Wildwood, NJ  for several years
