No longer able to upload to OLC

Confirmed today at my glider.  We can no longer claim OLC flights directly from the LXNav units.

This is due to a change that OLC made.  The following text came from my 9070 when I tried.

Unforunately, the OLC upload and claiming cannot be performed at this time.

 

Because of the restrictions imposed by the OLC team, we are no longer able to support direct claim functionality.  Should these restrictions ever be lifted, we would be happy to resume the OLC upload & claim service.

I have written an email to the OLC asking why they have made this change, and ask if there is any way to reverse the decision, or at least allow paying members of the OLC to have this ability.

I strongly urge each and every one of you to do the same.  There are not a lot of us compared to all of the pilots, but we should do what we can to make our voices heard.

The question is worst than expected, below the answer from OLC (probably you already received it):

Dear OLC-competitor,
the informations about upload/claiming to OLC via LXNAV Connenct on the LXNAV website are wrong.
The true situation / the facts are:
LXNAV has not complied with data protection standards (e.g. no IGC file upload to an external server/cloud), contractually agreed with the OLC in 2014.
LXNAV has confirmed this error and terminated the preUpload contract from 2014 on 30.12.2019 and the upload was stopped by the OLC afterwards.
The OLC hopes that LXNAV will now redesign its products (e.g. LX9xxx) so that they can be use e.g. as a client for a correct upload to the OLC.
Then the usual claiming comfort 'LXNAV device to OLC' is restored.
Many glider pilots are looking forward to it!

Now the question is really commercial beacause I HAVE PAID for wifi option from LXNAV and I want all the features I have paid for otherwise I want my money back.

What does this bit mean? Are OLD saying they won't accept an upload if the file is also uploaded e.g. to Seeyou Cloud?

To be correct I attach here below also part of the answer I received from LXNAV.

"As was written by OLC, we did sign an agreement with OLC in 2014 and the initial implementation of the flight claim was done directly to the OLC server. However, because the OLC API is not really designed for systems like LX90xx (It is not really an API but rather a skimmed down version of the main website), it was not working ok. For each change on the OLC API side or an unexpected error or a bug on the OLC server, we had to build new firmware for LX90xx and distribute it to our customers. The release of new firmware for LX90xx can not be done overnight, whereas an update on the LXNAV Connect side can be done very quickly and immediately applies to all connected devices. Thus the idea of LXNAV Connect was born, the web relay service, able to mitigate any errors OLC server might spew out. We then expanded it and integrated various other service providers. LXNAV Connect was working great, however, it was not in accordance with the agreement with the OLC team.

LXNAV is fully compliant with the highest data protection standards. We relay (upload/download) data to many other data storage services such as Dropbox, Google Drive and SeeYou Cloud among others.
We tried to overcome this situation on a meeting between OLC, LXNAV and others in November 2019, however without success.
We have pointed out to OLC in which way the flight claim API should be improved to be acceptable for use directly on the LX90xx. We even offered to implement it for them for free. The only way acceptable to them would be for us to implement a fully functional web browser on our devices. This is physically not possible (lack of mouse or touchscreen). Thus we have no other option than to switch off the OLC flight claim functionality."

I stop here because it seems that the two parts involved have some difficulties to find an agreement or a technical solution.

This is really a bummer based on this information.  Given that LXNav was even willing to adapt and do the work for the OLC, I place "fault" on the OLC side.

Also, I can't think of a reason why the OLC shouldn't allow intermediate storage as long as the pilot agrees to this.  It is our data after all, and that is what GDPR requires.

It sounds like an argument between lawyers and businessmen, and not developers.

Obviously a direct API is ideal, and OLC should certainly take LXNav up on their offer to write one, or at least agree to do it themselves.

Instead, it sounds like they are just digging in their heels, and not likely to ever change from their position.

Sadly this means we might need to wait for a competitor to dethrone OLC kind of like how SkySight did with Blipmaps.  Such is the state of our world, that when people refuse to change with technology, they are chewed up and left behind.

No, they are saying that because LXNav stores the flight on their LX Connect server prior to upload, they won't allow them to operate like that.

And LX Nav has explained that they really don't have a practical alternative.  The OLC won't give them a viable path, so we lose.

Bob, please check the archive, this was discussed couple of month ago. We are all very frustrated with OLC and some of us already wrote to OLC. The more complains they get the better the chance they will listen to us. Maybe.

Bryce - The official OLC crew is known to be very stubborn.  It is highly unlikely that they will change their minds.  However, when I was sent a request to re-sponsor them this year, I replied that I would be more than happy to once they reinstate LXNav's ability to post my flights, but until then I would not be renewing.  I would politely suggest that all other pilots do the same, so that our voices are at least heard.

Ya I also politely refused to donate until it was resolved. As a matter of fact I sent another polite email reminding OLC of the fact this morning. Also sent another inquiry to LXNav on the issue.  Just trying to keep the wheels squeaking and the fire lit.

All, I am less interested in the contest aspect of the olc, and mosly post to share my flights.  Is there a good alternative to post to, and have lx provide a direct upload.  That might get their attention.

Agree on Skylines, I also like CrossCountryAero as it has many of the same nice features that are only implemented on OLC if you donate. For whatever reason it just hasn't taken  off like OLC. I sent a request to LX and CrossCountryAero for direct uploading back in Feb. 

Cdeerinck: Yes, OLC is very stubborn...and I would also add unresponsive.
