The https://www.weglide.org/ application offers inflight info via the Copilot function and a Coaching tool. I've asked LXNAV if they can integrate the Copilot functions into LX90X0 devices and for the glider mass calculations determined by the flight computer as the ballast dumps to be captured in the IGC file so that the coaching function which requires glider mass can be used with more precision.

The Copilot functions I've asked to be integrated are
  • Height of thermals
  • Weather satellite
  • Thermals
  • Vertical airspeed
  • Thermal hotspots
  • Live tracking
LXNAV advise that these requests are on the 'to do list'. If you think these features would be useful perhaps you can request them too. I don't know how the LXNAV to do list is operated but the number of user requests may influence priority.

You have many of those already via the SkySight integration on the LX9000.

Honestly , on my Lx9050 V9.51 , Copilot never worked .
Even on the ground with gliders circling overhead and clearly shown on my mobile phone , none to be seen on the Lx
And yes , proper layers selected of course

Told this to Lxnav , never got a proper answer

Given the weak network in the air , I download my Skysight weather layers on the ground and I use a correct
holder in the cockpit for my cellphone onto which I show the correct Copilot layer.
On the android version Copilot  seems to get the network reception much better

In the air in fact I hardly get any connection via the Wifi on the 9050 , seems to be stuck usually in "authenticating" on that
very same network/hotspot. Occasionally it connects , not very useful

Any experiences around ?
Any hints to increase the connection to the WIFI dongle ?

Many thanks

I have attempted to play around with the Copilot maps.  I downloaded my Skysight data on the ground, checked the cache status, took off, turned on my hotspot and waited for the magic to happen.  What happened for me was that after the 9070 connected to the hotspot it dumped the cache and then was unable to make a good enough connection to get any new data.  I lost the cache and got nothing for Copilot.  LXnav responded to my email that it would not do that, and asked for a debug report.  Then they asked me fly again, taking pictures of the cache before and during the flight.  I was busy getting my ass kicked in the Grand Prix, so I couldn't try it until last week.  To complicate matters, I updated all the firmware from the Beta program to the latest mainline V9.51 before flight.  In the air, I turned on the hotspot and watched as the 9070 tried to connect.  There's a whole lot of nothing in central Florida, so I didn't expect to get a good connection.  After a while I got the horn/badum startup sound with the LXnav startup splashscreen.  I lost all task data at that point, but the instruments continued to work.  I got another restart about 20 minutes later, at which point I turned off the hotspot.  I sent my second debug report.  Uros asked me to update my kernal, which I did.   On my next flight I left the hotspot off, but a few hours into the flight I scrolled past the pages with the Copilot map built into them looking for a different page. It might just be a coincidence, but a couple minutes later I got the splash screen startup page and lost all task data.  After that I figured I had nothing to lose, so I turned on the hotspot.  Nothing happened.  I did not lose cached data.  Third debug report sent.  Yesterday I deleted the Copilot maps and flew for almost 4 hours with no restart/data loss.

LXnav has responded to my questions, and seems to be working on the issue.  I am pretty ambivalent about the Copilot maps anyway, but figured I should see what they can do.  My intent in posting this is not to bash LXnav--I think they are working hard to make this work--but to let you know what happened to me.

I'd think twice about using these maps in a contest until you're sure you won't lose all your task data part way around the course.  I won't be.

As with firmware upgrades the LX should download new data, verify that it is valid and complete before deleting cache etc.

Hopefully they will sort it.

The best solution I found for addressing potential issues with the LXnav flight computer, is to have a smartphone holder and use either your regular smartphone or a dedicated one (I am using a dedicated Samsung galaxy connected to my iPhone hotspot) to run a backup flight computer (I am using XCSoar) as well as other soaring apps like Weglide Copilot. This works very well and saved me many times when my LX9000 misbehaved. I also found that certain functions are much easier to do using gestures with XCsoar than the grip buttons.

Marc, I had this problem as well and fixed it, I have just bought a glider with the lx9070, the previous owner also couldn't get it to connect reliably, only occasionally connecting to  the phone hotspot.  I changed the hotspot setting to be always set to the 2.5 GHz band instead of the 5 GHz band it connects right away, every time.

I was looking for the 2.4GHZ hotspot option in my iPhone but couldn’t find it.
This option is called “maximize compatibility” in iPhones, and indeed the LXnav WiFi connection works much more reliably when this option is selected.

Some feedback . Ps i run an android ...
I modified some hotspot settings , unfortunately cannot remember which one ..
Since then , or since a recent update of the android , i do get copilot data and occasional network updates in flight depending on the network .
Having said this  , i think i prefer to look at copilot data on the mobile phone (cradle) and keep the lx with the downloaded layers in front of me.
Still , it works

I recently upgraded the lx9000 to gen 5 and now see a banner announcing the WiFi has connected. The only option seen on the phone is adaptive connectivity. I do not think switching from 5g to 4 g will cause connection issues.

Any thoughts?
Dan

I would imagine that the only difference would be a speed gain in transmission , could be useful when the periods that the signal is available is small ?

I think this just amounting when the WiFi is connected.
Didn’t have anything to do with internet access.
