LVL1 folks: mark your calendar for Saturday, March 7 11am-5pm at Molly Leonard Portland Community Center!

Showing up to community events is how we used to grow the space; doing good works and talking about our space to folks. We had a couple of folks last time and a larger contingent would be even better! This is also a great way for us to rebuild our connections with local government.

I had a great time last time and I'm looking forward to doing it again.

Howdy  Partner!!

Got an Android A56 Samsung. Appears to have a power/battery issue.  Multiple power cords/power supplies don'y work. The device gas been having longer charging times required over time. At some times, the process says -- 20-30mins to charge.. other times 12 hrs, etc..

Until today. I looked, wth! - is the thing down to 25% with the cord plugged in. I realized, it's no longer charging!!

Quickly backed up as much/as fast as possible tp gdrive/sim card. 

I'm looking to get another phone, with hopes that straighttalk tech can help with remaining power before it completely dies. But I'm still going to need to fix device!!

Rachel from Public Works & KnowWaste reached out to me today as well and offered us room to table ourselves. 

I would like to coordinate with folks interested in volunteering and help set us up for mutual success at this opportunity. It was lots of fun last year. I’ll share this call for volunteers at weekly meetings. 

That’s Saturday, March 7, 2026 at Molly Leonard Portland Community Center:

A chance to lend your savvy in repairing the broken bringings of the community. 

The form allows you to specify your available skills and knowledge to lend and allows the event coordinator to make groups and let attendees know what help they may receive.

This sounds like fun and something I'd be interested in helping with.

Was wondering if you could provide a little more detail on the specific computer-related tasks we might expect.

And if these might qualify?  Just thinking of things I do at home, or for family and friends.

- install linux-mint on an old seemingly useless notebook

- discover and copy image files from a notebook to a supplied USB drive

- basic system 'cleanup / optimization' of aging notebook

- connect an old phone to wifi to use for browsing

- copy files from any old hard drive to a newer supplied USB device

- install docker on newish notebook / desktop to allow any open-source tool or application to run

I like the idea of re-purposing or extending compute especially for underserved.

I didn't see much of that last time but we have time to advertise that it's possible to do that and we'll see. I also didn't have much visibility on the electronics repair side; I had a ton of knife sharpening tasks and was fully booked for that.

interesting.  when i first retired a few years back, i learned the basic knife-sharpening technique, bought a stone, and made a wooden rig to hold it.

if that is in high demand i'd be glad to participate in that, too.  glad to use my stone (haven't used it since) and learn finer techniques along the way.

i now spend a lot of spare-time on vibe-coded hobby apps, utility apps for various volunteer involvements, etc. and even some of the re-purpose activities mentioned above.

should i go ahead and fill out the form with topics in my original post and we just work on the outreach as time allows?

That’s great Dave, glad you’re interested. Yes I’d recommend to fill the form out as appropriately as you can. Most of what I saw was on the appliance repair side, mainly home cleaning/ toasters/ vacuums. 

There were some computer repair folks that had a wide skillset to offer but the types of repairs will depend on who finds out about the event and decides to come with what they might have, so letting them know your skills asap is awesome. 

The other thing I’ll mention from last time was they targeted repairs to happen in 30 minutes, depending on number of volunteers/ attendees you may have more time. But if the work takes longer and you find interested people, could be a great way to connect them w LVL1 to meet for further help you may be willing to give.
