Side topic. I think my fellow LUNAR'tics are a little tech-oriented, and I might just be able to trust their opinions.

I'm looking into Permanent Outdoor Lighting. Those kinds allow you to use them for Halloween/Christmas and sync them to music, or just to light up the exterior of your house. Some  lights are all the same color. Others are individually addressable, allowing for a running color change.

Does anyone have any? What do you like or dislike about them?

Here is one example but I cannot find a brightness/lumen rating for these.

I recently saw this:  https://lifehacker.com/tech/i-tested-all-the-permanent-outdoor-lights-and-heres-what-id-buy

My neighbor has the Eufy setup and it’s nice but annoying - he leaves it on all night, every night.

I'll be sure to point that out to my wife. I want them off at 10, perhaps 10:30. She wants them all night, including the back of the house.

Lights on all night are disruptive to all manor of wild life, especially migrating birds. I get the desire, especially this time of year, but it's really fairly bad for those reasons. If you're worried about security, then motion sensors are a good way to have the light when you need it, but otherwise not "light pollute" the night. Plus, if you're a star gazer, it really ruins the opportunity to see the faint things. Trust me...I live 4 miles from the port, but their lights literally delete the stars for me.

However, the tech involved is intriguing. That's a part that does interest me. Time to break out the Arduino and write some code!

Have fun,

I figure that the deer and raccoons just can see what they are eating.
Regarding security, I have 7 security cameras that verbally announce "You are under surveillance," when you are in range. They also show angry red lights when they see you.
Star Gazing in Hayward is virtually impossible anyway due to the light pollution. Oh, wait. I'm part of that light pollution. I'm lucky if I ever see something other than Venus.

I bought garage/driveway lights from Home Depot. IL51886022 HALO came in two brightness levels. Making up numbers, I'd say one is about 1000 lumens and the other is 2000 lumens. For $10 more I bought the 2000 lumen lamps. Then I tried to back my car into the driveway at night. The lights were so bright that I could not see anything but the lights. I had to create and install a dimmer.

I’ve had a hummingbird attracted to the VCSEL on my security cam which recorded his attention.
Deer see mainly in the UV range and are blinded by white LEDs.

My neighbor has a year round light show worthy of a Grateful Dead show at Winterland.

Bought the eufy ones. Individually they aren’t bright but lots of them reflecting off stuff and they light up areas well. Stupid amounts of app connectivity and choices. If there’s a use case you’re unsure about feel free to ask.

Biggest dislike is the power adapter isn’t weather resistant. So those power bricks went inside boxes at the rear of eaves. Been fine for over a year.

Blast from the Past! You still on the NAR board?

I've been reading a lot of the reviews. Several people point out that the power supplies are indoor rated. Since they will be tucked up under my eaves, I'm not sure if that really matters. Many also point out the lack of customer support.
I have not read that any can control multiple strands independently and together. My idea is two strands about 100 feet long, where the back of the house can be turned off while sleeping.

If you get any kind of fog, it may not play nice with electronics under the eaves.  But maybe I’m just overly sensitive living here on the coast.

Hi Tony,

This dangerously borders on discussion about rockets. After two terms on the NAR board, there were a number of work and personal things that I felt were in the way of me doing a good job if I ran again and was elected again. I chose not to run rather than serve poorly.

I’m a few miles from the coast and what little fog I get hasn’t been a problem. It’s honestly questionable whether I should have even bothered with the plastic mounting boxes.

The eufy strands are a hundred feet long (60 lights) with a bit of lead before the first light. You can’t chain 2 together you’ll need to run them from separate power and controllers. I did see discussions from people trying to up the power and hack the controller but that seems like a lot of work.

You can program a light sequence and control it based on time or based on triggers from other eufy devices or other HomeKit compatible smart home stuff (which I’ve never done). Programs can be per “house” or per strand. Each light is individually addressable for color but brightness is per controller. Blinking or any pattern is also per controller (unless there’s a setting I’ve missed). The phone app is fine and allows control in basically real time if you want. I don’t think the web portal is any good (who uses a computer these days? Probably telegraph operators).
