I like the analogy of any erosion criteria as “a broom to sweep away damaged elements.”
Rather than focusing on Lagrange elements and the necessity of erosion, consider instead using an MM-ALE (Eulerian) approach or SPH. These both have their limits, but typically erosion is not among the limitations. --len
