There are a few (3?) keywords specialized for SALE, e.g. *BOUNDARY_SALE_MESH_FACE.
I believe SALE meshing was not intended for detailed mesh describing as you outline. Rather a simple way to construct box like ALE meshes.

Jim Kennedy kindly shared with me a note from the LSTC developer of SALE, Hao Chen, that suggests using the keyword *DEFINE_BOX to identify nodes on SALE meshes; see the last page of this document:
