Defender 300Tdi air con blower

The air con blower has packed and I have removed the air con housing to get to the blower. The resistor pack also gave up years ago so only fan speed 3 worked and that was ok but now that the blower has seized it is time to fix the whole lot.

 

I have not found a replacement blower yet but I have a new a/c unit for the Td5 so thought I would simply do a swap. The Tdi and Td5 housings are the same physically, I have done a test fit and the Td5 housing mounting points are the same. The Tdi housing has the single control for speed and temperature whereas the Td5 has the separate controls. The Td5 has a larger more efficient blower which takes up more passenger foot space, but the refrigerant pipes fit through the bulkhead.

The problem is that the wiring loom connector is completely different and the number of pins do not match. I assume this is because the Td5 has another section of wiring loom that also integrates into more sensors and the ECU? Has anyone done this?

 

I assume this is not going to work, so has anyone been able to find a replacement blower?

Hi Renzo.

My 1996 Tdi also decided to do the same thing last year. I bought a replacement blower motor but it was a different size. You cannot get the same ones anymore.  Then the trip down the rabbit hole started. Now @ R23k down the line the aircon is working perfect. Solution is that I took it to a Landy aircon specialist. Now my old Tdi also has two electric fans like the later models a new pump and the radiator bit in front replaced. What a nightmare it was and then I just threw a lot of money at it and it is working with a warranty. Speed setting also working again. Hopefully good for another 29 years.

If one can find both the TDi and TD5 wiring diagrams, it should not be too difficult to connect the wires.

See attached wiring diagrams which details difference between TDi and TD5.
There is an even older wiring diagram for the Defender available. I have Haynes workshop manual at home which I also find useful for cases like these. Unfortunately I will not be at home for a couple of weeks. Hope this helps.
