Hi everyone,

I hadn't even been thought up when Kate released basically all of her discography, so I'm not really 'in the know' to know what "Best of the other sides" is. I originally thought it was a new album because it released on Spotify this year, but after looking at a few posts here, it's obvious that these songs aren't new and that it's just a compilation. So, I'm wondering where did these songs come from? Mainly "under the Ivy" and "You want alchemy" (<--definitely a fav), I assumed they're covers since the rest of the songs on the album/compilation are but what from?

P.S. sorry if I'm not doing this right, I've never used google groups before.
P.P.S. Gaffa.org is amazing, I've been reading all the interview transcriptions and looking at photos so thank you for making it!!

Best regards,
a 16-year-old confused Kate bush fan

Hi Ivana,

The tracks on this compilation are mostly single B-sides. Though Lyra is from the soundtrack album for The Golden Compass and Brazil is from the soundtrack album for Brazil. The 12-inch remix of Hounds of Lounds was released as a 12-inch single.

I'm not sure what Walk Straight Down the Middle is doing here, since it was on the CD version of The Sensual World as a bonus track. It wasn't on the vinyl, though, probably due to the limitations of how long an LP can be without sacrificing sound quality.

Most of these tracks were released previously on CD, but only as two disks of extras in a boxed set of CDs of all her albums at the time.

I’m reminded of The Smiths’ Paint A Vulgar Picture.

Pshaw! You're living in the 20th Century, Don. No one buys media anymore. (Except for the few people who like to own the pink vinyl version for whatever reason. And if that pink vinyl brings them happiness, why deny it to them?)

These days releases like this are for Spotify and Apple Music so that people can stream the songs, which they wouldn't be able to do if the songs weren't made available. (Though you can also find most songs on YouTube, that's clearly not the ideal way to listen to them.)

Thank you, it makes sense now! But it makes me wonder, how much other Kate bush content am I missing out on?!

Disks 7 and 8 in this boxed set contain most of Kate's official non-album songs:

There are also bootlegs of songs that Kate wrote and recorded at home when she was a teenager. Mostly just her singing with her own piano playing as accompaniment in low fidelity. Collectively, these are often called The Cathy Demos. If you look around, I'm sure that you can find them lurking on YouTube, etc. Though it should be noted that if Kate catches you listening to any of this stuff, she will track you down and kill you.

P.S. How in the world did you find us as a sixteen-year-old??? Google Groups is extremely old-school! Everyone else here is ten times your age, at least.

P.P.S. Please don't read my interview with Kate on gaffa.org. It is highly embarrassing.
