Hi guys, I have a mini project that I'm a bit struggling with, so thought to leverage on collective intelligence of more experienced machinists.

I'd like to build a drag engraver tool for my 3018 to cut solder mask out of my PCBs.
Construction seems simple, engraver bit goes into a tool holder, set screw to avoid bit from falling, spring on the back to apply pressure.

If I managed to take the current ER11 extension rod out of the motor that would be easy - but it's pressed fit so tight i can't take it out!
Any recommendations? I read they should be tight, but then you can't change them based on operations...

Second approach, build the custom tool to lock into the current extension rod.
This means M14x0.75 tap, which is £25 when you find it cheap!
Any alternative you can think of? Not sure doing an M14 internal threading on lathe is doable, unless you're a Jedi.

Thanks!!
C.

Can't you build a tool that gets held by the ER11 collet?

Something like https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CNC-SPRING-LOADED-DRAG-ENGRAVER-TOOL-COMPLETE-KIT-7MM-COLLET-CARBIDE-TIP/274289472718?hash=item3fdced34ce:g:bKUAAOSwhexcHj8R

or am I misunderstanding?

Yeah, makes sense!

I didn't consider that ER11 collets went up to 7mm; bit tight but should work:)

Thanks!
Chris
