I am a new member and interested training for the Mill and lathe
Are metalbashing Wednesday Meetings going ahead at the moment and if so at what time?
I am interested to get trained and accredited to use the Bridgeport Mill and would also greatly benefit from training on the Lathe. I have been using a Myford in a home workshop for turning and some milling so I start with a few rather basic skills. In the future I would also be interested to learn some CNC skills.
Currently building a pump block and other parts for a 1901 Steam launch.
Keen to get in touch with the maintenance team  Liam, Tim and Dean?

Hi,

I am also a new member who is interested in mill and lathe training.
I have previously used a Bridgeport mill and various lathes, but this was many years ago and I should probably now consider myself a beginner again.
My availability is generally good on most days and evenings of the week and I am happy to try and join up my induction at the same time as the other new member above (apologies I can't see their name as it is appears redacted).
Also possibly interested in learning MIG and TIG welding, and CNC milling/turning at some point in the future.

Kind regards,
Oli.

(FYI - I am currently working on an ebike project and I need to cut some 2.8mm wide keyseats into a partially threaded steel shaft (steerer tube, currently detached from fork, may be hardened). I expect I may need a 2mm woodruff cutter or a 2mm end mill for this. I am happy to buy one to donate if you don't have one. Additionally, if your arbor press is serviceable then I may look to turn some aluminium drifts to help with pressing this tube into the fork crown. Do you know if your arbor press is serviceable?)

Hello. Michael messaged me directly but I'll reply here -

I stopped giving lessons when the space closed for the pandemic but I guess we could start doing them again. I also recently moved house which has meant I've not been around the hackspace as much lately.

I used to charge £40 for a lesson on the lathe, this was a token amount really because the lesson usually takes several hours and was to make sure whoever asked for the lesson was committed to it.

Some members apparently thought this was about paying to get access to the machines, it was very unsatisfying to get to the end of the lesson and find they hadn't really listened and wanted me to authorize their card. What we proposed was that after the lesson(s), you have to separately do an induction on a different day, just quickly showing that you paid attention and aren't going to do anything dangerous or that would damage the equipment.

We have some shared tooling available but things like endmills are generally consumable and you would need to bring your own.

It has been a few years since we did wednesday meetups but I could head in on wednesday evening if you like.

Tim

Hello, just to say that personally I totally support the idea of a small compensation for the time of any member who's capable and happy to give training on complex and delicate tools like lathe and mill - I thought the training I received (from Tim) was very valuable, especially to understand the specific quirks of the tools available in the Hackspace.

Please keep up to great support Tim!

Ps. Tim can you reach out to me separately for potential training on MIG/TIG welding? Thx

Dear Tim & Oli

Wednesday evening would suit me (what time do you have in mind?). I would quite like to train from the assumption that I know nothing as any formal training was  40 yrs ago and though I have some recent practical experience with a small lathe I am mostly self / YouTube taught and it would be well  worth covering all the ground just in case I know less than I think I know.  It sounds like Oli ( my apologies I forgot to sign off on my original post) has a little more experience than I but I imagine we can still comfortably learn together.
I completely understand your distinction between training and induction and am happy to return to induction once I have covered the ground in training. Once you have seen our pre existing level of expertise on Wednesday perhaps you could realistically asses  how much training ground we need to cover before talking about induction.  I am more than happy to pay £40 for your time on Wednesday, I will have to see what I can do about materials, end mills etc ahead of then, as mine are kept some distance away.   I will certainly bring drawings and materials from my current project so you can see the type of components I am trying to fabricate.

I also thought I saw something scheduled for 4th September to clear up the workshops and service the machines, if anyone knows approximately what time I will try and come for that as I am sure there will be  something useful I can do.

Hi Tim & Michael,

Tim, Thanks for coming back to me. That all sounds entirely reasonable. I would be very happy to make a contribution to you or a donation to the space as you direct.
Michael, any training I had was also ~25 years ago so I expect I will also be starting from quite a basic level. I too would much rather cover the basics again to ensure safety than try to run before I can walk. I would be happy to team up for training.

Wednesday is as good a day as any other for me. I am quite flexible on time on Wednesday but I would prefer to start at the earliest time that is suitable for both of you so as not to finish too late into the night as I live around an hour away from the space. What time would suit you both best?

Regarding my project, I am happy to buy and bring with me an appropriate end mill or woodruff cutter. Are there any considerations when purchasing a cutter to cut a 0.6mm deep by 2.8mm wide slot? i.e. I was considering a 2mm woodruff cutter. Do I need to ensure I buy the correct size for the milling chuck?
While, I have not tested its hardness, I expect that the new shaft I need to cut might be hardened somewhat as it is a threaded thin-wall tube stamped 'HS'. I doubt it will be very hard as it is only a bicycle fork steerer tube, but in your opinion, do you think that a basic HSS cutter will suffice or do I need to be looking at a carbide cutter?

Many thanks,
Oli.

Thanks for your input, yes it seems totally appropriate to compensate members who can offer training. I am new to LHS so keen to learn and keen to contribute. Anyway very grateful to Tim for reaching out on Training

Earliest I can manage on Wednesday would be about 5.30, maybe 6.

Oli - I'd be inclined to go with a small carbide endmill and take it slowly.

Christian - cheers, and yes I can show you the welding equipment at some point.

Hi Tim, Michael, Dean,

Thanks very much to you all for the session yesterday evening. It was great to meet you and the other members and I got a lot out of the evening.

Tim, I am keen to get another session booked in to cover the basics of the milling machine. Would it be possible for us to get booked in at a similar time one evening next week?
Michael, can I presume that you would like to team up for this as well?
What are your availabilities like next week? Wednesday is tricky for me next week. Could Tuesday or Thursday be an option for you both?

Dean - Do you know if you plan to attend the space on any afternoons next week? If you have time to assess my lathe induction during your visit that would be great. If there is an opportunity to do this earlier in the same day that we see Tim for the mill training that would be helpful, but of course I would be happy to work around your schedule.

Kind regards,
Oli.

Dear Oli & Tim

A massive thanks for Wednesday.

I can do Tuesday or Thursday evening.  I know Tim you where reticent about your expertise on the Bridgeport, but a run through on the machine and the basics would be invaluable. Do let us know if you have time for s session.

Oli FYI I think my Oyster is still assigned to your account, I suspect you will need to delete it, In the mean time I will try to register another Oyster so I am in no hurry, though now I have the code for the card, if you can release it I can get it registered online.

Oli

Thanks I have now successfully added it to my own account, hope to see you Tuesday or Thursday.

If I may I will send you photos of the Bike Battery I am trying to get repaired, it will be a great help if you can put me in touch with the right expert.
