Hi,

Anyone selling their music on band camp here?

What are the pros and cons if you are?

I heard they did away with pay pal and want folks to use stripe which I’ve never heard of?

I’m currently doing a sub with them right now but in the long run if it’s not worth it, I’ll cancel.

Thanks.

I have an active Bandcamp, not very active because not many people use it from my sphere.

I have absolutely used Strype when Clubhouse had a give money button and I was playing wellness spaces think COVID lockdowns and when I started the all-night Lullaby rooms for the sleepless in everywhere. Strype Express is generally what most people use now through things like BuyMeACoffee and I think Bandcamp. That’s far easier than setting up Strype but it’s doable.

As to Bandcamp itself, if your genre works with it, that will be good. But if your fans are used to getting your music on Alexa, their car stereo, etc., they won’t like Bandcamp, at least that’s what I found. That being said, if I was going to dig back into a much younger me and do a dark synth / rave / 90s dirty industrial experiment for a few of the old OG goths out here in Portland who used to kick it at the Howling Frog in the early 90s, I’d def do that on Bandcamp, but where your fans are used to listening to you everywhere, they don’t really do the Bandcamp thing too well. That and your uploads are pretty metered. Personally I’d start with a donate button from PayPal to your project and a link to your music on Amazon, your DSP puts it there and people who buy your mp3 files there can take / play them everywhere.

Bandcamp’s a great concept, Strype Express is easy to connect to one or more of your payment sources, and Strype Dashboard is doable. Bandcamp’s problem isn’t Bandcamp, it’s just that everyone is used to “listen everywhere” solutions like smart speakers etc. unless you’re in one of the aforementioned communities a couple old friends keep hounding me about getting back into.

I’d def go with Strype Express if they’ll let you. Strype Dashboard is overkill for what we need as artists.

HTH,

Dave

Ok, please elaborate/clarify. I can do a donate button.

Where should I put this donate button?

Wherever you socialize your Bandcamp like on Instagram or X there’s a tips feature where you can enter that info, or on your artist.link or other site. I’m no social media expert though, far from it.

BandCamp is the site everyone loves to tout as you can sell your music for your own price, which is great. But as pointed out what it lacks is the everywhere availability of streaming platforms. The other thing that everyone seem to conveniently leave out of the discussion is that you don’t get paid for free streams on band camp.
Yeah if you know people in that genre is hanging out there and constantly looking for new music there a bandCamp account can be great, but its should be in addition to your streaming strategy not in place of. Streaming services discoverability algorithms is tough to beat especially when you  consider platforms like Spotify and YouTube. Not sure what band camps discoverability algorithm is like or if they even have one, but it’s not something you ever hear people talking about like they do Spotify and or YouTube.
Yes streaming is penny’s per stream and band camp lets you sell at your own price, but neither of those  two will make. You any money if you aren’t working hard to market yourself and push your music. BandCamp isn’t a fix for low streaming pay, it’s just another option, one that for the most part will probably be n inconvenience for most people wanting to listen to most music today.
BandCamp is not the make more money than you can on Spotify thing I see a lot try to position it as, or at least its not unless you are will ing to put in similar amount  of work into promoting yourself as you would of to get your Spotify streams up. And even when you do put in all that promotional work, you are hoping a lot of people are gonna want to deal with downloading from band camp and adding to their other music service or library so they can put it in playlist with other songs they  like.
