Hi,

With her kind permission, I just uploaded Deborah Tatar's book A Programmer's Guide to Common Lisp to the Internet Archive.

I think I was actually missing that one!

Might be fun to see people's bookshelves - sometimes you get a picture of their interests. I guess I'm kind of a dead tree pack rat.

Not pictured are my historic Lisp, Smalltalk, and Logo magazines as well as some unmentionables like my AutoLISP book.

This is my main retro bookshelf. I have more computing and other books on nearby shelves but the bulk are buried in piles of still sealed boxes and other stuff in the basement, the remains of a hectic home relocation almost nine years ago.

The book got the thumbs up of Steven Harms: "it’s very good."

My main computer-related (old) books:

I also have ~6 linear feet of woodworking/woodturning books & magazines; and about as much of gardening/fruit growing books & magazines. (I was the original webmaster for California Rare Fruit Growers, crfg.org.)

And of special note, my wife’s Volumes 1 & 2 of “Calculus” by Tom Apostol at Caltech. Both bound upside down, from different publishers!

Nice collection!
Maybe the Calculus books were the Australian edition. :)
One of my Smalltalk (Squeak) books was also bound upside down ...

I've enjoyed seeing other people's shelves in this thread.

My favorite item in my book(ish) collection, Vol 1 No. 1, May 1937 AMBIX The Journal of the Society for the Study of Alchemy and Early Chemistry.

I didn't realise Alchemy was still a formal study in the 1900s. :)
That's an amazing collection in breadth and depth!

I think this is my oldest "computer" book (1954). One thing led to another and well ... I framed it with my collection of old "computers" here.
(I'm a few bones short of Napier)
The "sorocalc" is particularly interesting. You practice your soroban skills on the right and check it with the calculator at the left.
Abacus (soroban) is still taught as a tool for very fast mental calculation in Japan.
Apparently "some guy" made one for Emacs even. ;)

1954? This massive, damn heavy thing I've got was published 270 years earlier if my Latin numerals are right, in 1684. CLtL2 for scale. The text is in a very early implementation of Italian released 342 years ago.

I need to attach the photos to 3 different messages otherwise list delivery fails. This is part 1.

Wow!

Your copy appears to be in more “pristine” condition than the digitized copy in Google Books:

https://books.google.com/books?id=asH8ylzCU_YC

(at least from the lack of annotations in yours on the Title Page)

It’s also in archive.org:

Some notes:
  • I bought the 3 PostScript books so I could write the Interlisp PostScript Lispusers package!
  • The "Introduction to VLSI Systems" working copy was provided by Carver Mead when I was taking the VLSI design course at Caltech ('77-78). My class project is part of the "project chip" image in the final book, page. (I still have that chip.) Carver Mead was my undergraduate advisor.
  • Too thin to be seen is the "PDP-1 Manual", 1960. 64 pages.
  • Also, there is the MIT Report "A Time Sharing System for the PDP-1 Computer" , 1962
  • The "TALESPIN" binder refers to James Meehan's story writing system for his PhD. This has a paper describing some of the design (but no source code), and also details of MICRO-TALESPIN and MICRO-MUMBLE. Dr. Meehan's Introduction to AI course at UCI (Master's program) started me down this path!
  • I got "Principles of Interactive Computer Graphics", Newman & Sproull, when Bob Sproull was visiting professor at Caltech. (Ivan Sutherland had just become the had of the Computer Science department, and he brought in several noteworthy visiting professors: Alan Kay ("The Alan Kay Mystery Hour" was the official title of his course), Alan Perlis, James Blinn.
  • "Data Structure Techniques", Thomas ("Tim") Standish. My graduate advisor at UCI.

The missing page number in the VLSI book: 135. (I hit send too soon.)

The image is just the metallization layer, and it is actually a mirror image.

The book image is the negative of the mask.

DTREE/DTX is the system to construct and edit Decision Trees, and then execute them.

I’m working on getting that running in Medley.

I need a new example Decision Tree, as the one I have includes info that might be proprietary.
