I installed an android ftp server app, wifi ftp by mdj studio, to
transfer some files from phone to linux pc Since transfers over
wireless are slow I went to sleep When I awoke the partition
containing the directory I had transferred files to had been all but
wiped Nearly all directories have vanished I noticed in gparted the
partition had an msftdata flag set

A few things:
  • Not sure what you want this LUG to help out with. This isn't an incident response LUG.
  • The MSFTDATA flag is common and doesn't mean anything. It was likely there before.
  • I searched around and found no negative comments on that software being used maliciously.
  • Jumping to the conclusion you were hacked as a result of this software is a stretch.
  • I could be completely wrong on all of this. But back to my point: what is there to do?

FWIW.
I am by no means a Linux expert nor am I familiar with "wifi ftp by mdj studio". But....a quick search
returned links and descriptions that suggest it's to be used for transfer from PC to phone.
No mention of phone to PC.
