I used MX Linux. Hope same process in Ubuntu. iBus is was the best for my use.
Three easy steps.
1) Installation from Synaptic.
2) Make iBus ready to type Amharic
3) Start typing
1) Installation from Synaptic.
First install ibus-m17n, ibus-gtk and ibus-gtk3.
Important to install both ibus-gtk and ibus-gtk3 to type in Amharic
on different applications or editors.
You can install fonts-sil-abyssinica if you want more font choices.
2) Make iBus ready to type Amharic:
Start iBus: Input Method > Add ( select sera(m17n) from list of
languages.)
Sett keyboard shortcuts to change a language. For ex. CTRL+Space.
3) Start typing.
Press CTRL+Space to activate iBus and type in Amharic. You will see “አ” in the taskbar.
If “አ” is not appearing at first attempt, try to logout and inn or reboot.
Good luck.
