If this is the case in the largest vegetable mandi in the country right in the national capital, the status in the rest of the country can only be imagined! All stake holders beginning with the consumers to producer farmers to the labourers except the traders probably are the losers.
Obviously, agriculture has totally failed and the buck stops at the top viz. the government and those who head it now and before and their wonky policies. The state has failed. The market has failed. If the society fails, we had it. Yes, the society cannot fail.
The situation cannot become more worse. And therein lies the opportunity to turnaround! Out of the box thinking and throwing out of the old thoughts and policies is the way forward. Hence, the optimism.
Again and again, I have to go back to the example of creation of NSE, a near perfect market for shares of companies against BSE using public funds. BSE was not killed. It could not be. Hence, a competitor was created by the state. Unfortunately, this single entity NSE itself has become a problem with its heads playing hanky panky, is a story for another day.
Best wishes.
