Hey everyone,

It's time for the once-every-five-year email to this group, hah!
As many of you know, some friends and I made a surf movie called Sliding Liberia back in 2006 -- way back in the days of standard definition DVDs.

We finally got around to remastering the film for streaming, and you can find it here:

Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Are Kent, Landis, and I the only ones left in country?

If you're around, let me know!
My mobile is 0776.559.781
I'm currently in San Francisco, but I'll be back in LIB next week.

Best,
Nicholai

No way!

Of course you'll be back there in October. The next email to this group should be some photos of Cottons going off!

I forget how many people are on this thing; but I'm glad it still works.

Congrats on getting your film up for streaming--now I don't have to dig up the old DVD.

If you have a blog or a place where you write about your current work in Liberia, I'd be keen to see it.

-Nate

Nate,

We were just talking about you today. An online publication called us asking how Liberia’s surf competition started so, of course, you and Elie came up.

I just started a Instagram account called surfliberia and it will follow the development of the Robertsport surf club there. Not sure if you do Instagram…

Great to see your name pop up! Hope all is well in NZ.

It's great seeing everyone's replies on here.  It's been so long.  I cannot wait to watch this again.  Keith, I hear you.  We are landlocked in Rwanda these days.  A lot of stand up paddle boarding for us.  I would love to share a line up with you all again.

Nicholai, thanks for sharing and jump starting this forum.

Nicolai!! Love the update, and the quint-annual (every 5 years?) update to this group, so good!! Sean, Keith, Landis, Nate and others, so nice to hear little update snippets! Keith, I'm still in nyc through Oct if you make it to the EC - hasn't been the best season, but scored a few good days, with more on the way this weekend (it seems). Anyone else, my fam and I will be back in San Pancho, Mexico from November through March (baby #2 due Dec 9!), if you happen to be in the zone or interested in any Mexican waves...

In other news, I scored some offshore beers in Nicolai and Heidi's backyard a couple months ago, a wonderful (if brief) slice of IRL hangs from this group.

So stoked that film is up and viewable, gonna give a proper watch again and share it on the "Surf Chatter" whatsapp group that specializes in groveling all the windswells the east atlantic throws this direction. (lost the dvd years ago, sorry)

Robertsport in October: swoon.

Abrazos a todos!

Wow. i didn't realize I was still a member of this group. But glad I am! Can't say I (or Amy) have been doing any serious surfing in some time (although lots of stand up paddling on the Delaware River!)… I was out in LA last month and caught a couple waves before slamming into the sandbar and ripping my rotator cuff! That was fun!

But as it relates to beer… we do own and operate a craft brewery in the Pocono Mountains now (www.shawneecraft.com). If anyone is ever in the area, stop by our taproom for a pint.

(PS. love that Sliding Liberia is available to stream now - I have often told many people about it, but haven't been able to point them in the right direction. Thank you!)

It’s great to hear from everyone!
Although it’s too bad that more of you aren’t getting waves 😂

If any of you pass through San Francisco (or Liberia), please let me know. We should do a reunion one of these days.

Great to hear from you all!  Nicholai - thanks for the resurrection of the group.

I still have the DVD and actually it floated out of all my boxes and landed on my desk when we moved from NYC to LA last year - such good memories! That fisherman section is burned into my mind.

I've been getting a lot more waves out here this past year than I was in New York - though there is a real lack of Estey in my sessions, which is sad.

Otherwise I am doing well! My wife had our second daughter earlier this year and I am obsessing over the best way to make sure they both surf!  Any tips much appreciated.

Wow, memory lane, it's really great to read the updates on everyone. I am fortunate to be able to continue surfing with Nicholai and the ever growing Liberian contingent. As a little update Landis won the women's national surf competition this year, go Landis. We're actually working with the officially registered Grand Cape Mount County Surf Club Association to develop a piece of land as an income generator for the crew up there. I wouldn't hesitate to say that there are at least 30 to 50 kids surfing between RP and Monrovia. Waves for Change has also got a program going in Harper and Monrovia so lots going on for the locals these days.
We are also working with the ISA to try and get a crew certified to be surf instructors and working with the local coast guards to get the kids certified as lifeguards.

All this being said it's not like it was, Landis and I still surf 9 out of 10 days alone and we seriously miss all of you in the water. Good times, just to throw it out there we have moved and developed a compound that has an extra apartment, so if anyone ever gets the urge we have a place for you to stay.

Much love to you all,
Kent

Ah man, I just found this gem in the back of my gmail.

Nicholai, thanks so much for posting and making Sliding available online.

I'm afraid I'm landlocked in Denver, but happy to report this year all 3 of my kids will be out on the slopes, not quite as cool as surfing but it'll have to do. If any of you pass through let me know.

@Kent where in Harper is the surf? I did an exploratory trip out there, Dec of 2009, and was hard pressed to find a good break.

I showed the 2021 remastered Sliding Liberia at a theatre last week along with the film Big Wata. 85 people came there and it generated a ton of questions. Thanks Nicholai for sharing the film with me and helping me raise money for the surf project in Robertsport. It was a great night, well received and fun to share surfing stories from Liberia.

Hey John,
Great to hear from you, The break is right at the river mouth. They have built a surf clubhouse and meet there 3 times a week for the Waves for Change program. It looks nice but I didn't see any surf there this year.

All the best to you and your family.

These updates are fantastic. Anyone lurking and listening and doubting that they should speak up . . . speak up!

Elie and I are in the Far North of Aotearoa NZ; we've got a massive swell window, since the land's just 10km across up here (Tasman Sea / Pacific Ocean). But that said, it's a lot of driving to get from one spot to another. Much of the time, it's like Liberia--waves firing somewhere but you'd have to surf on your own, which is still not my favorite thing at size.

Guess I'll have to wait for some of you to visit, whenever our borders open up again.

Keith congrats on the Marriage.
Landis (and Kent) thanks for the contest update. It's such a pleasure to follow your work on Facebook. It's exemplary stuff.
Hapke, congrats on kid #2.

It's still weird to me that a bunch of you ended up becoming Rockaway surfers. If Sandy hadn't smashed our bungalow while we were in liberia, we coulda welcomed you into it.

Cheers all.
