PR #4182 appears to fix issue #4181, which reports a serious syntax-coloring bug.

I have spent two days tracing, studying, and documenting the revised code. There is a good chance that the new code is rock solid. Imo, the new code is clearly better than the old.

Please test "devel" and report any problems. Thanks.
