I noticed that .journal format behaves differently than .dat.  It requires a couple extra keystrokes when starting a new line.  Not a big issue, but which file type do you recommend?  (I use the vim plugin, so .dat is not a good option.) thanks!

I’m surprised that there is a difference, ledger is quite agnostic of
the filetype...

In any case you don’t need an extension at all with vim, you can just
add that at the top (or bottom) of your file:

; vim: filetype=ledger

And it will be recognized as a ledger file

I would assume that has to do with the editor you're using, not with ledger.
