Annual register report w/monthly subtotals

I'm trying to figure out how to run a register report for the year that subtotals by month. ledger reg ^exp -M -p 2020 is close, but does not show subtotals for each month.

ledger reg ^exp -M -p 2020 -n gets me the subtotals, but I lose all of the detail.

Any suggestions on a method to show the register detail and subtotals in the same report would be much appreciated.
