Hi there,

I am looking to describe returns within voxels. I am looking for a dispersion type metric, median and mean locations within the voxel, and really any other possible descriptive information about the points within (k-means, PCA, eigen, etc.). Which of your tools would be best for getting at this data?

Thanks

David

Hello,

Certainly the intention of lasvoxel is to provide these kinds of metrics in the long run. Some of those metrics you already find in lascanopy/lasgrid, however, there most of them are per x/y cell and not per x/y/z cell. What would be the expected output and use for the metrics you are looking for?

Regards,

Martin

Thanks for the response. I am not exactly sure what the outputs would be. In Fusion software, voxels are created and stored in many "height-slice" DTM's and also within a singular descriptive CSV describing, I believe, statistics on elevational statistics of returns within each voxel (see grimetrics or cloudmetrics; http://forsys.cfr.washington.edu/software/fusion/FUSION_manual.pdf). Having metrics on the relationships between points within the voxels versus between points and the ground, would be of great use in the world of machine learning, and likely other applications.

Does this get at your question?

Thanks again

Hello David,

a lot of the metrics available in FUSION are implemented in lascanopy. Can you check if some of your needs are met with those?

LAStools has traditionally been developed based on the concrete need by a user for a certain function that was identified as being generally useful for everybody and then iteratively refined and tested.

Martin
