On 8th August Mick Breakell photographed a pair of Small Red-eyed Damselflies mating on the South Pond at Longton Brickcroft. So they are spreading further in, just as we hoped last year.

Hi all,

I guess the season is pretty much finished now - just a handful of Common Darters and Migrant Hawkers to come.

So I'm beginning to pull together the year's records for submission to the BDS and would be grateful if you could let me have yours when you can.

If you put your records on iRecord there's no need to send them as I already have them.

All the best,

Steve

Steve,
Still 2 male Southern Hawkers at Burnley yesterday 5/10/20 and they may be around for a while yet, weather permitting.

Hi Steve,

I originally sent a copy of my 2020 records to steve...@btinternet.com on Monday 12th Oct. Since I haven't had your usual acknowledgment I assume you didn't receive them - perhaps that address is now defunct. So here they are again by a different route.

Best wishes, Brent Jolley

I think I've got most people's records for this year, either directly or via iRecord. But would appreciate any others in the next fortnight or so in order to get everything sent to the BDS and to write the annual report for Darter.

Best regards,

Steve.

Just received via the BDS photographs of a male SMH at Middleton NR on 24 August 2019, taken by Mike Gregory (attached).

A possible male was seen there in flight only on 16 July by Malcolm Downham so was perhaps the same individual.

This is the second record in Lancashire, after a female at Birkdale in July 2015.

If anyone still has 2020 records outstanding, and not yet entered on iRecord, could you please send them to me ASAP as I need to send them and a summary report to the BDS by the end of the year.

All the best for 2021,

Steve.

The Lancashire & Cheshire Fauna Society decided at its recent AGM to produce an updated edition of 'The Dragonflies of Lancashire & North Merseyside' which was published in 2015. That publication sold out quite rapidly and is now no longer available. The other titles in this series - covering non-avian vertebrates, butterflies and day-flying moths, and bees, wasps and ants - are all still available from the Natural History Book Service,

It's hoped to produce the update fairly quickly so we're hoping that some of the survey gaps can be filled in 2021. I've attached a map showing the distribution of records as of 2014 which indicates the main areas that records are 'missing'. These are mainly upland areas but also some in the lowlands, including parts of West Lancashire.

If anyone can target any of these areas (restrictions permitting) that would be extremely useful.

It would also be useful if anyone has records from anywhere from past years that haven't yet been sent to me or entered on iRecord to get them as soon as possible.

Let's look forward to a productive year.

I saw three at Priory Meadow on Monday. One was photographed at Brockholes about a week before that.

The brockholes photo was taken on the 14th, to be exact.

The season is surely coming to a close, so it would be very useful if everyone could pull together and send me their 2021 records (or any for earlier years).

If they've been posted on iRecord there's no need to do this as I already get them.

Please include as much detail as possible:

Species

Site name

Grid Reference

Total seen preferably with numbers of males/females/tenerals

Any breeding activity - mating/ovipositing

All records will be passed on to the BDS nationally.

The Lancashire& Cheshire Fauna Society is intending to produce an update to the county atlas, although it's not yet been decided in what format, so the sooner I get all the records the quicker this can get underway.

For interest I've attached a very brief summary of 2020's events which has recently been published in the Lancashire Bird Report.

Best regards,

Steve.
