The monthly meeting of the Lakeside Freethinkers was held at Yves' restaurant on March 19, 2026.
Chair Lloyd Kumley opened the meeting at 4:05 p.m. and asked each of the 10 attendees to say a few words about their backgrounds.
The topic of the meeting was talking about a favorite book which had influenced each group member's thinking and moral outlook.
Lloyd spoke about two of David Eller's books which led to a robust discussion about what all religions have in common. His chosen books were "Atheism Advanced" and "Natural Atheism".
Brad then talked about 2 very different books which had opposite effects on him:
"Atlas Shrugged" (negative) and ""Tao Te Ching: Backwards down the Path" (positive).
Peter made enthusiastic comments about the last book written by Carl Sagan called
"Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark". He emphasized the need for 'critical thinking'.
Dab chose the John Robbins' book "Diet for a New America" which outlined facts relating to factory farming and the relation of one's diet to health and the environment.
Chad is a great admirer of Richard Dawkins and spoke about this author's classic books: "The Selfish Gene" and "The God Delusion".
Linda concluded with Thomas Friedman's book about globalism entitled "The World is Flat", saying that it reflected her views about the benefits of global integration.
Rich added that a good online source of free books is the digital library at " Achive.org". He also recommended "Culture Catz" , available on you tube, which focuses on 'misinformation'.
Food & beverages were served and enjoyed until 6:15p.m. when the meeting ended.
Respectfully Submitted,
Dab Steadman, Secretary
