Reason this enhancement is critical for this milestone:

Defaulting is on the critical path for promoting CRDs to GA in 1.16 (compare https://github.com/kubernetes/enhancements/blob/master/keps/sig-api-machinery/20180415-crds-to-ga.md). We have to land this at least as alpha in 1.15, to have an beta-level agreement about the API in 1.16 in order to not risk the CRD GA roadmap. CRDs are critical for the ecosystem.

Risks from adding code late: no risk, only the KEP is delayed due to review bottlenecks; the code is not.

Risks from cutting enhancement: CRD GA roadmap is delayed.

The KEP is currently under review and we are working towards getting it into an implementable state on Wednesday or Thursday.

I'm in favor of granting the extension. I probably won't be able to take action on this KEP until Thursday afternoon at the earliest. I was / am crushed by a ton of KEPs.
