Hey there folks,

Hacktoberfest, an annual month-long program to encourage Open Source engagement by rewarding people that open PRs has triggered a very large influx in spam across quite a few Open Source projects. Kubernetes being one of them :(

If you encounter a spam PR making an unnecessary change, please just go ahead and close it.

If you're seeing repeated spam PRs, please escalate it to the GitHub admin team via the #github-management slack channel or email git...@kubernetes.io.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.

Hi, you might also want to label the PR with "spam" or "invalid", so it doesn't count for Hacktoberfest. See https://hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com/details#spam

At this time we don't have those labels configured for Kubernetes. If we did add them, they could only be added by a much smaller subset of people (those with write access to repos) without creating a bot command to add them =/

As of late last night, hacktoberfest has gone to opt-in only
To be included, repos must include "hacktoberfest" in their topic.
That should take care of the spam PRs. \o/

Digital Ocean issued additional guidance yesterday on the spam: https://hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com/hacktoberfest-update. Looks like they now ban individual users for too many flagged PRs. Not sure what the process of flagging a PR is, but it may be worth following through. Hopefully that reduces the noise from spammers.

Will k8s or any sub-project repos be participating in hacktoberfest at all now? The new opt-in requirements say that PRs in participating repos must also be merged/approved which I think would make opting-in safer from spam now.
