All,

Happy holidays to everyone!

I wanted to email you all because Sarah and I have been working on the Kubernetes Youtube channel, and we have some new things to announce alongside a request to help with further improvements.

Cool new things that we have so far:
  • Separate playlists for each SIG's meeting recordings, though some aren't visible yet simply because they have no content
  • Updated front page with sections for popular videos & community meetings, rather than filling the front page with the most recently uploaded videos
What we need (please help!):
  • We need to spruce up the channel UI, which starts with a banner (channel art) at the top of the page. So anyone who has recommendations / artwork available, please send it our way! Or, if you're willing to make something, that would be much appreciated.
    • Youtube recommends a 2560x1440 px image for the banner
  • We need content for the channel, in several flavors:
    • We need a channel trailer - a two minute video as an "intro to K8s" for unsubscribed people who find our channel
      • We're looking for recommendations on existing videos to use for this. Or, if you're feeling particularly inclined, making such a video would be immensely appreciated.
    • Please let us know if there are other K8s videos somewhere that aren't currently on the channel! We can link them to the main channel and feature them in appropriate playlists :)
    • If you have ideas about what content to feature on the landing page in sections, like the "Popular videos" and "Community Meetings" playlists are currently featured, please let us know. We're happy to reorganize things to be more user-friendly
      • For example, Sarah and I discussed possibly making a "demos" playlist, and then featuring that on the front page for anyone hoping to see K8s in action

Thank you all in advance for your help!

Happy holidays :)

Cameron and Sarah

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ht22ReBjno could serve as a nice introductory video but it's 8min long.

Hi Cameron (and Sarah)-

I'll throw some channel art together for you - look for something later today or tomorrow.

Hi -

Hope everyone enjoyed, or is enjoying, the holiday.

Here are a couple of options for the YouTube channel art. They borrow the background graphic from the header on kubernetes.io. I've made a slight update to the tag line from the hero, adding "Open-Source" to the beginning.

The second option includes a version of the YT logo in K8S blue.

Lastly, I also recommend you update the avatar. The current version of the brand avatar (1) has a white background and (2) runs to the edge.

The version below has (1) a gray background which matches the hero on kubernetes.io, (2) provides some padding and (3) provides a 45º shadow consistent with Material Design guidelines.

Have a wonderful new year!

Cheers,
Ariel

Hi Cameron and Sarah,

Happy Holidays to everyone :)

  • One suggestion regarding the intro to kubernetes, how can people start using it in a fast and quick manner.Maybe a video on "how to use Kickstart Kubernetes using Minikube" would be a good idea.
  • If anyone is in contact with the meetup owners, how about asking them to post/send links to any videos they have posted or taken.
  • How about creating a special playlist collection of videos for the beginners ?

I will also make sure to add some of these cool videos to the awesome-kubernetes list.

Regards,

Ramit Surana

Michail,

Thanks for the recommendation! I think that's a great introductory video, but there are two hangups:

  1. As you identified, it's 8 mins long, compared to the recommended 1-2 mins. I don't think this is a huge deal, at least for an initial trailer video.
  2. More importantly, we can't make a video into the trailer unless the K8s channel owns the video. So I'll need to speak with the folks @ Deis about uploading their video to the K8s channel in this way. Any Deis employees with a contact for the PR folks? I'll do my own digging but I'd appreciate help if it's there :)
Also, happy new year to all! A quick reminder to please help us with channel art, finding K8s videos, and organizing front page content if you have the bandwidth! Thank you to those who have already sent me videos to upload / link - I'll be working on that today and it should all be done by tomorrow :)

Cheers,

Cameron

Sebastien,

Thanks for these! I linked them to the "Kubernetes Videos" playlist for now, and we may eventually split up that big playlist into more specific groups :)

Ariel,

Thanks so much for the art! Sorry I missed it before my response to Michail yesterday. I've just changed the banner (we went with the one with the blue YT logo) and icon, and it looks a lot better! I got a message saying it may take a little for the icon to update to go through, but we should be good to go by the end of today :)

Thanks again,

Cameron

Ramit,

These all sound like great ideas. I have some follow up questions to yours below:
  • One suggestion regarding the intro to kubernetes, how can people start using it in a fast and quick manner.Maybe a video on "how to use Kickstart Kubernetes using Minikube" would be a good idea.
Do we have such a video already? Otherwise, could you help make one / help identify someone to help make one?
  • If anyone is in contact with the meetup owners, how about asking them to post/send links to any videos they have posted or taken.
Yes please, great idea! I may still have regional meetup contacts from the K8s birthday event, but if anyone who wants to cc me on an email to a meetup lead it would be much appreciated.
  • How about creating a special playlist collection of videos for the beginners ?
I'm happy to do this if ya'll are willing to help me identify which videos should be in such a playlist. This would be ideal, since we could feature that playlist on the front page as well, making it easier for new users to get started :)

I will also make sure to add some of these cool videos to the awesome-kubernetes list.

Awesome!

Thanks again,

Cameron

Hi Cameron (and Sarah)-

You'll find a collection of Meetup videos on our YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/user/StackPointCloud/playlists. Right now, the NYC Meetup playlist has the most videos, but we should have some from the SF and Bay Area Meetups available later this week.

Cheers,
Ariel

Hi Cameron,

1. I don't think that we have any sort of video like this.I will begin to work on it.But due to my college studies & current job search,I believe it will take some time to be completed. If there is anyone who wants to work on such type of stuff, please let me know.Would be happy to help.

2.In India, currently there are not many such Kubernetes meetups.I know the host of one in Bangalore.I will ask him to help for the same.We can surely post this message on kubernetes-meetup-owners@googlegroups mailing list,as suggested by Sarah. Let's hope we can make this on a larger scale than ever :)

3.If everyone approves, I think you can start the playlist collection by adding some videos on your own.Later on we can recommend/add more such type of videos on that playlist as we move on.Although this approach will take some time to be completed but I believe that the results will be fruitful.

Thanks
