For what it's worth; not having read the thread about $IIXDR sentences in its entirety I may be missing the point of the thread with this post, but as an alternative to probably more expensive commercial transducers I imagine it should be possible to build one or more poor man's transducers using a combination of a relevant type of sensor (such as current, voltage, humidity, etc.), an Arduino and a bit of self written code intended to convert measurements of the sensor to an XDR type NMEA sentence and outputting it on a network.

Thanks for the link to the blogpost, it made for an interesting read. A looooong time ago I tinkered a bit with, I believe, a voltage and a current sensor attached to an Arduino with the idea of doing something similar (i.e. obtain data characteristic of the operation of something) albeit in a house. Cool to own one's own trawler BTW.
