I've been having issues with upgrading since the switch to Composer. In the past I was able to download the Github version and upload to my Dreamhost shared server. Because Dreamhost does not allow shared hosts to run Composer, the recent changes to both Known and several plugins are causing issues. I've been able to work through some issues, but today the Twitter plugin has stopped functioning because Brevity isn't found and there's no documentation on how to add Brevity via SSH or FTP.

I guess I'm asking a general question on the path ahead for open source users: Are we stuck not being able to upgrade if running Composer is not an option?

I'm sorry you've run into trouble here, and that this wasn't properly documented. Here's how it's going to work going forward:

1. Packaged release downloads will never require composer. (The v1.0 download is coming very soon.)

2. You will require composer for any upgrades straight from master.

The best bet for interim upgrades is to install composer locally on your machine, if you can - then you can run it there, and upload the resulting files to Dreamhost etc.

Thank you Ben.

I was able to work on it over the weekend and load Composer locally on my Mac to get the Twitter plugin working again. I wasn't able to do the Known upgrade via the package currently on the Github Master because Composer couldn't find a file in the package, so I left things as they are for now. Looking forward to seeing where 1.0 will take things.

Yep, just to underline what Ben said - the GitHub / composer route is really only for people who want to track bleeding edge developments, or roll their own distro.

Absent a 1.0 build, you can use my unofficial packages at https://www.marcus-povey.co.uk/known

Best,

Thanks Marcus and thank you for the development work you have performed on Known project. As mentioned earlier I was able to fix the immediate issue with the plugin, so I’m good until the 1.0 release.

I think this is a good opportunity for me to apologize to the group for the serious delay in producing the official builds. The next version will be 1.0, and I had hoped to release at several points earlier this summer.

As some of you know, my mother is terminally ill, and has required my attention this summer. Known is no longer produced by a startup (I’m in the process of formally shutting down the corporate entity) and while I’m committed to the open source community, it has been harder to give it the time it deserves. The worst is over for now and I’m hoping to be able to return to it in earnest.

I’m grateful for everyone in this community, and I’m excited for the road to 2.0.

Ben
