I began answering this way back in
2022 and have been remiss (known as "busy") in not ever
completing it.
However, please, all Readers, if you own Stocking's history,
please correct the huge error of attributing Robert (who moved
in increments from CT>MA>VT>NY>OH and fathered so
many children who left so many descendants) as #284 when he is
clearly #476.
Please chime in with more comments or additions because the
long gap since we last discussed means I may have errors here.
I recently have found a plea made on Ancestry.com Message
Boards [under Help, the old Rootsweb.com message boards] from a
KJ Knowlton who also descends from Robert 476 but through his
son Daniel (#598), whose birth date and mother are unsure. I am
hoping she will join us here.

Hi,
A few of us got involved in helping Kent with researching a
woman's descent from Harold Ross Knowlton back to Ipswich, Mass.
His first work, using Stocking and other references gave him
this line--which is WRONG, so do not copy--put here for
teaching purposes w my correcting notes in brackets:
William Knowlton (1604-abt. 1655)
John Knowlton (1644-1728)-> [***b. abt 1646***]
(Capt.) John (1670 - ?)
Andrew Knowlton (1720-?)->
Robert Knowlton (1743-1831)-> [#476, in Stocking ***no
source of proof found***]
Chauncey Knowlton (1795-1845)-> [ #595 in Stocking, m to
Anna Phillips, death date 7 Aug 1841 in Mercer Co., OH, had 12
children]
Chauncey “LEVI” Knowlton (1818-1882)->
[ #1581 m to Amma Tuttle; I have his death date as ca. 1884, not
certain; do not know why he is named Chauncey here rather than
Levi, because Chauncey Sr and Anna had another son named
Chauncey, #1587 b 26 Oct 1828 in OH and d 8 Oct 1908 Cass Co,
MI]
[As often happened, the movement of Robert's family from
VT>NY>OH>Indiana and beyond meant that until the 1850
census began to show whole families (instead of just Head),
Stocking and the East Coast Knowltons lost track of most of the
12 children and their descendants.]
Chauncey Knowlton (1845-1924)->
Lloyd A. Knowlton(1883-1921)->
Harold Ross Knowlton(1918-1991)->
Kent,
Also, Kent, even with Patrick's good tree, I have some
reservations.
Robert's first wife was Rachel Perry. Patrick has left Rachel's
death unknown.
After we all had struggled with this line for years, mostly
Dean and Patrick, but others chimed in, Dean found some proofs
that Rachel must have died before May 8, 1781. She had given
birth to her second child, Zerviah Knowlton 1 Apr 1781 in
Woodstock, Windsor Co., VT. [sources available]
If that is so, then all other children must be those of the
second wife, still unknown. (unless born earlier than Zerviah,
who was named for paternal grandmother)
Patrick has the third child Daniel (named for paternal
grandfather) born ca. 1782 and the child of Rachel.
I have him born ca. 1785, based, I believe on census records,
but those are fuzzy. Because he is born after May 8, 1781, I
attribute him to the second wife.
What I am saying is that Daniel is not firmly born to either
wife.
But, since your researcher descends from Chauncey, 4th of
Robert's six children, there is no doubt but that her ancestor is
the unknown second wife.

Thank you, Elizabeth!!
I certainly am familiar with the names, Dean Case and Patrick
Hays.I've asked her to persuade her brother to submit with YDNA.
That would confirm descendency from John 2. I will now be able
to guide her in correcting her tree. She is the granddaughter of
Harold Ross Knowlton.
Dean, boy did I struggle deciphering that bounty request
letter!
Thanks all,
K
Dean, thanks for sending on the attachment.
No, the father of Chauncey is NOT 284.
We need to move from the present (Harold Ross Knowlton) to the
past. Always. No point coming down someone's tree without
solving each piece going up. The reason there is no proof is that
it is wrong. Probably in Errata too--sorry, I did not check
there.
It has been decades since Dean and Patrick solved all this,
filling in with many details. If Chauncey (595) is your
correspondent's ancestor, then his father is (476), whom I call
ADHD Robert because he was all over the map, born CT, served in Am
Rev from MA and married first there, moved to VT where first wife
died, remarried (still unknown) and moved to NY state where he
served in War of 1812 (excellent pension records), finally moved
on to Ohio where many of his children had gone, and died at
Chauncey's place. A tough old man.
Dean and Patrick did wonderful work. I am still filling in
details in my tree. Robert has Gazillions of descendants.
Here is Patrick's profile of Robert:
