Sam, aren't you related to this side of the family?

Hi

Just reaching out after searching through the Ancestry.com message boards.

We bought part of 87 Remsen in 1989. I was curious about the history of the building and searched the archives at the Brooklyn Municipal Building. Turned out that they had the original plans from 1890 (and from the 1953 renovation as well). Ebenezer Knowlton's name was listed as the owner.  I then read somewhere that he was in the hat business. The name being unusual (to me), I looked it up in a phone book and was surprised to see the name listed.

I called and introduced myself to Eben Knowlton. We chatted for a while. I was looking for some pictures of the original interior, but Eben had none.

A big surprise came soon after. I mentioned the conversation at a friend's dinner party, and the host told me that she knew Eben, and that, in fact, I met him at a previous party.

I called Eben and told him about this coincidence. He came over soon after, and we have been friends ever since. Eben gave me a large book on Knowlton genealogy.

My wife is from a long line of Mainers, and there may be a tenuous connection somewhere.

Not too long ago, another Knowlton came by the house and spoke to one of the other owners, piquing my interest again in the house. We spent time and money preserving the exteriors. Some of the original interiors are still extant, but much of it was cut up when the house was sold in 1953 and converted to apartments. It became a coop in 1987.

Does anyone have pictures of the interior? I would love to get copies.

Thanks, Sam, for sharing these.
As I remember, the original Ebenezer, the hatter, was from Massachusetts,
made his fortune and his move to NYC.  A descendant of William (3)
Would you guide our readers to a couple of the best trees on line?

That's correct! Eben b. 22 Sep 1906 (Eben 3, since they never use Jr/Sr/III for some reason) was my great-grandfather. His son Eben ("Buck") still lives in NYC and the pictures I sent came from Buck's grandson Eben (Eben 6) who lives here in Austin and is (along with his wife) currently expecting what may be Eben 7 in December.

My father grew up in Falls Village/Sharon and knew Ebens 2-4 quite well. Eben 3's brother Bill Knowlton was my grandfather and his other brother Peter Knowlton taught me to play chess at his beautiful old house on Buzzard's Bay in Marion, MA, which is still owned by his descendants.

We actually have very little besides biographical information on Eben 3, so if anybody has any, here is his line on Wikitree. Even some anecdotes would be welcome -- pictures especially!
