I checked the ice on Lac Deschênes this afternoon and it is very good :  black, 7 inches, no snow to speak of.  A few cracks but very flat and passable. Just hoping some of you could make it here before it's too late.  This afternoon would have been a blast if someone else could have come with me. Let me know if you are willing to come by here.

Yvan, What gorgeous ice. Where is Lac Deschenes? North of Ottawa? I know where Britannia Yachy Club is, but othrewise Ottawa is a sailing puzzle to me. How did the GWC work out, Did you get yer Rast mast?
Hope to see you in the New Year, soon.

Lac Deschênes is a widening of the Ottawa River that is in between Ottawa and Gatineau (Hull and Aylmer sectors). The lake is accessible from both the North side at the Aylmer beach, or from the South side in Ottawa at multiple points including the Britannia Yacht Club at the East end where the Deschênes rapids are, the Nepean Sailing Club, or the Lac Dechêsne Sailing Club at the West end. There are also several parks with parking lots managed by the National Capital Commission along the South Shore (Ottawa side) as well.  Today I went to the parking lot at Shirley’s Bay park, at the end of Riffle Road in the west end of Ottawa. It’s on a large bay of shallow water where there is no current.  There is ample parking space as this is also a boat launch area.

For those who would want to come to Ottawa, you can call me or text at 613-986-0112. Simon Martin, KC 6026, and his girlfriend are the only other people I know in the area (Aylmer) with iceboats. I just contacted him and he is keen to go when he will be back in town.

I did get my Rast Mast at the GWC. Good sailing practice on Friday and 8 races Saturday. I left Sunday because of -25 degrees C and no wind. It was a long drive for a short stay, quite hectic for me. The only other Canadian I met there was Paul C. Glad I went. Learned a lot.

John, when I was at NDHQ in the 90s I sailed my DN from Nepean SC. That is probably the easiest to find launch point on Lac DesChenes for Kingston or Montreal based soft and hard water sailors. There is a public launch next to the club and with luck, the clubhouse may be open.

Warren, the ice at Hay Bay is superb.  It is much closer and well understood.  I plan to be back at in by Jan 29.  Are you coming to visit?  Did you see the video I sent of PVR sailing Hay Bay yesterday?

Hi John,

It was my plan to come up for sailing but 10 days ago I had hernia repair surgery and the surgeon has me on a 10 lb lifting limit for 8 weeks. Iceboating is toast for me. I see the surgeon again in a week or so, but have another surgery to follow. Life gets in the way sometimes. But it is better than the alternative.
