Anyone have a "near-real time" translator for spoken language solution? Or anything you would recommend? This would be for a Spanish speaking student with no comprehension of spoken English. Right now, they are using Google Translate, but they are having to do the speaking, wait for the translation, then read (or use speaker? - not sure about that), and respond, while waiting. Options could be software application or hardware possibilities.

If the student has access to an iPad, the Apple Translate app might be worth exploring.

1) Open the app and set it to “Conversation” mode.
2) Tap the three dots (•••) and choose “Auto Translate”
3) Tap the microphone to begin translation.

The iPad will listen for English and perform the translation automatically in near-real time.  For best performance, I would download the Spanish language package to the device, and if possible provide a usb-wireless mic for the English speaker.

Another option to consider would be the new Live Translation capabilities of AirPods (Pro 2 or 3, and AirPods 4).  This does require an Apple Intelligence capable device (iPhone or new iPad Mini) in addition to the AirPods.  Note, I have NOT tested this yet, but it looks very promising.

Please feel free to reach out if I can help at all!

If you have access to Microsoft PowerPoint, Ashley found a translation hack using the subtitles in presentation mode.  I don't think I can explain how to do it in writing, so here's a short (2-minute) video showing how it works:  PPT Translation Hack video

The classroom teacher (or student) could explore the language translation options in Brisk AI. I love using that app with my bilingual students.

Another potential game changer are the new AirPod Pros. Live language translation is an option and text can be displayed live on the iPhone.

Our district oftentimes gives ELL students with low level comprehension of English an iPad and have them use the translate app there. It is oftentimes very helpful, especially if the student is doing work with other students.

I've not seen this yet, but Google Class Tools is supposed to offer live transcript and translation now if the teacher is using a Chromebook.  I think this also requires the Education Plus license.

Step 4: Configure captions and translations
The teacher's ChromeOS device microphone captures audio. Then, the transcript can be seen on teacher or student devices, or both.
  1. On the Start new session page, click Captions and translations.
  2. In the Captions and translations pop-up window that opens, configure captions and translations:
    • Show captions on my screen—Useful if you’re connected to a flat-panel display screen and are presenting to the class.
Note: Allow students to use captions and Allow students to translate are not available until after the session starts. For details, go to Configure captions and translations.
