I can't forward the article from the Atlantic; but it's titled "The forgotten war that Iran has already won".
What is says is that Iran's "hidden war" has been to destabilize the Middle East, mostly through proxy actors. That would be Hamas, Hezbollah, etc. This has been going on essentially since the Ayatollah gained power. And in this arena they have succeeded quite well. When Arafat and previous Israeli PM's worked out  some peace accords, Iran worked to sabotage the success. Radical Israelis assassinated  a previous PM. Other terrorist events also took  place. Etc. But  Israel/US hasn't really been able to do a lot in this arena.
So Iran has been a bad actor in the Middle East for decades now. Not news. But best efforts by everyone hasn't stopped this. Trump is the most bombastic entry into this arena; but his success will likely be about the same. What has happened is that Israel has gottem more and more radical. Used to be the about 80% wanted a peaceful 2 party solution. Now it's about 20%. And the gov't has gotten more radical, with Netanyahu the upshot.
Peace is further away then ever. And today's action probably won't change the outcome by much.
The article is worth the visit.

Ok so now will you join me and accept that they have been at war with us since 1979 or are you just going to give them a hug?

Be nice, even when you don't want to!

Neither Brian. I never, as in never, suggested that Iran was warm and fuzzy. For you to infer that makes you a ignorant asswipe (again).
But it doesn't justify Trump's abrupt attack on Iran. In your own repetitive words, Iran has misbehaving for decades. So, in your own words, there was NO, ZERO, ZIP reason to attack without consultation, including with Congress. Trump could also have consulted with our allies. Instead, he and Netanyahu embarked on this by themselves. They are now under the  Powell doctrine- you break it, you own it. That's why NOBODY is moving to assist. In fact, European nations are moving AWAY from assisting. This is the bottom of the barrel as far as diplomacy goes.
It could have gone much differently but for Trump and his unhinged approach to everything.
I think he was motivated to act quickly to distract from the Epstein fiasco. It even appears to be working. Also, Bibi Net probably did some goading as well. But being led around by Israel isn't exactly great diplomacy. So many better ways to have gotten where we are today. And where ARE we today? Strait of Hormuz closed, check.
Gas prices skyrocketing, check. Inflation up, check. Iran dug in even more, check. Our allies less and less inclined to back us up, check. Arms being shipped away from Ukraine, check- and thanks from Putin, check and double check. And on a bright note, Republican fortunes nosediving faster than a peregrine falcon, check.
And of course massive depletion of US war materiel. CHECK.
And for a saving of over $200 billion, Obama got a decent nuclear deal, along with a free SOH.
And our trusty ally Israel, in the midst of a "cease fire", still bombs Lebanon; which was supposed to be part of the deal.
Everything listed here is pretty verifiable (fact, you know). But BK is free to dispute this, using his very own Magic Eight Ball to find the truth.
Iran has been nefarious for a long time. But that doesn't mean that we couldn't have been talking to them, at least through back channels. In that same time period China has WAY more nefarious and ultimately dangerous. They've become our strongest economic opponent; they have serious territorial ambitions. They are a REAL threat. Yet we talk to them, negotiate. At the same time we spend like $300 billion a year buying from them. And they steal our technology whenever possible. But we don't call them evil, etc. We do our best to handle their intentions. Maybe that's because they are actually too dangerous to actually mess with. Maybe that's why Iran wants a nuke. They can read the tea leaves; they can see how we deal with China/North Korea, etc.
No matter what MAGA and other low knowledge folks say, Trump has walked himself into a quagmire. And he has no IDEA how to get out.
And speaking of MAGA, a LOT of those folks are backing off support. You know it's bad when Democrats are reading Marjorie T. Green's posts and nodding their heads.
