Something else to celebrate

Docs have twice the suicide rate as the general population

Female docs have 76% higher rate than the general pop. 

Depression rate is 30% among medical residents. 

Grim stats to be sure. I wonder what kind of effect it has on the quality of care that these docs provide. Also wonder why such stats. 

I'll speculate that the selection process for admission to medical school doesn't pick those that are actually most suited for the work. It focuses on grade scores way too much. 

I remember taking a course in particle physics on a whim after getting accepted to med school. Total science geek from US Berkely, visiting up at UC Davis. A few years later he's in my med school. My guess is that he became  some kind of research scientist,  probably working on MRI's or PET scans. Can't fathom him at a patient's beside. Perhaps an extreme case; but....................

Got a brother who worked 30+ years as an air traffic controller. At one time their suicide rate per capita was numero uno.

He survived. Retired a couple years ago.
